Besides every fluid being changed what else should I get checked on my wagon to prepare it for the long drive? Going to Portland Oregon from Knoxville TN in 2 weeks!

check and carry extra belts and hoses..pretty much just good look over everything to makes sure is not leaking or fouled up in anyway...check oil level everyother fill up and keep an eye on those guages to catch anything before it happens and ya should be fine...

good luck..sounds fun

I'm not sure where to find them anymore, but there's an emergency fan belt that you can buy with adjustable links for emergencies. Something like that could have saved me a lot of trouble on a long trip I took some time back. If you can't find that, get a pair of panty hose - they'll work in a pinch if a belt breaks or something locks up on you.

Also, join the Cruiser Emergency group through the board. (can't remember what it's called) - may need to talk to Woody about getting the list quick though...

Congratulations on a very wise decision. Portland was my home for 20 years and is an amazing town. Just remember to drink up. PDX is the birthplace of microbrew craze! Whatever you do, make a McMenamin's Brewpub your first stop!

Regarding your trip? Um, draft off big rigs and save gas!

Besides the great things you've already done, there are two things I would do no matter what and that is to buy AAA coverage (premium - 100 mile towing) and to check tire pressure.

After that, depending on time, money, condition of vehicle, some things to think about include the following:
check brake pads
look carefully at the waterpump weep hole (underneath) to make sure it's not starting to fail.
look carefully at the oil gally plug by the #5 spark plug hole to make sure it's not starting to fail.
replace any of the following that havn't been done in awhile: sparkplugs, wires, rotor, cap, air filter, fuel filter, pvc (aka - a tuneup)

lovetoski oil gally plug at #5 spark plug....do tell what is that???

lowridetide - there is a hole in the head near the #5 spark plug. It's from casting the head I think. It's plugged with Solder or something. It can weep oil, and worse it can pop out and you loose all engine oil really quickly. It's a known "problem" but only happens infrequently. When it does happen it's got severe consequences. The fix is pretty easy, and involves drilling out filler and replacing it with a bolt. There's a writeup on this procedure somewhere on this board, but I gotta go pick my son up from school, so I can't go find it right now - sorry!

See ya,
