Uh... Any tips for a guy who's oldest vehicle ever was a 96 80 series?
It'll take some getting used to..

:D;p

It seems like you have everything already figured out.... 80s suck.

I'm back to DD'ng my 76 FJ40 and couldn't be happier (even when it leaves me stranded or smelling of gasoline). Congrats & have fun.

Well it's going great! The only things Ive done are paint, one oil change so far, rhinoliner.

I am getting a lot of blowby and it's drowning my air filter in oil, and I am pretty sure I have a vaccum leak somewhere, and I still don't know much about carburators, or any of it, really, but I'd say it's damn reliable still! And absolutely fun to drive. I wouldn't change it for anything!

And here is a photo of her now:

and when I first got her in April:

However, I did notice another funny thing the other day. My front tires, and only front tires are wearing funny. Not alignment, as it seems that every other "knob" is lower than the rest, and others are higher than the rest, but it seems to be a pattern.

I took some photos and hopefully you can see that every other knob is wearing differently. The knobs in the middle of the tire are even wearing at an angle front to back. It's strange....

Any idea what would cause this?

your tires are cupping....how many miles since rotating?

Well I haven't rotated them in 10k miles. I didn't know it was that important! Or maybe because on my past vehicles I used a shop and didn't know it was that important.

Just rotate em and I'll be good?

I dd my 72 40 for a year an a half that was bone stock, after 6 months I put a shackle lift and some used 33's I got for free and it was the best time of my life. I took my fiance out on our first date and now she wont let me sell it ever. It did take its toll on the body tho. Lotsa rust from bein a snowplow for it's first 35 years. Cant wait to do it again, but first it needs some work, well alot of work, but it's cool.

check your PCV valve if its not functioning properly it could cause your oil symptoms, nice looking cruiser by the way

G'day mate, I also daily drive my 1977, it's a nice ol' car. Today I had the choice of leaving my FJ40 at a mates house or leaving my partners flash Subaru for the coming fortnight. I chose the FJ40, of course, even if she is suffering electrical issues at present!! :) Glad you're enjoying your '40 the way it should be used ;)

X2 on the cupping. I don't know if they do it in the USA, but here in Europe we can get our tyres "shaved". It will cost you 1 or 2 mm's, but the cupping will be gone.

I generally don't have that problem here, but my ute gets a chance for dirt play every second job

Replacing your PCV and grommet will most likely solve the blow-by issue, gotta love a $10 fix ;) It's really important to rotate tires with big lugs every 4-5K as mentioned above, they are still safe but will be rather loud from here on out.

Nothing quite like driving a 40 to put a big grin on your face eh?
