Ok, so I have been nursing the 80 for the last couple, three months, debating on which way to go after developing a rough idle and the mysterious consumption of coolant from my overflow. I have decided to go ahead and get the 1FZ-FE rebuilt. I have a machine shop lined up and a garage to use (won't fit in my garage) in which to preform the surgery just working out the details for starting date now. Pretty much just going for a stock rebuild. I plan on doing some gasket matching and some polishing, but nothing major as I am trying to keep the down time to a minimum. i'll try to post up some pictures of the process. Hopefully I will get another +280,000 miles out of the next go round.

yeah, i'd like to borrow it soon. will sync up with when I get closer to being ready.

Thanks

Sucks that the motor needs to be rebuilt, but I'm glad that you have the resources lined up.

If you need help, make sure to let us know!

Best of luck Eric. Youll love the fresh motor; alex really does.

Make sure they dont hot tank it and pooch the oil pump bushing.... though Landtank now has a replacement for the previously unobtanium item. Cant think of any other tricks other than patience with the top two bolts on the transmission as they can be a real pain. Keep us posted as it sounds like this thing will be around to try and survive Garret now :D

always loved that truck Eric, glad you are securing its future. And my hat is off to you for putting that many miles on it while still using it how it should be used.

I'd like to make it up to help but it may not be in the cards for me, when do you think it will be done..... we have a MEGA HAMOM to fill in the schedule in July

thanks for the encouragement, I will get started on it soon, maybe this weekend. Hannah wants to drive it when she gets her license, then Garrett so it is going to need to last through a couple new drivers and still pull it's weight on the trail. At least they will be protected :)

Picked up parts this afternoon, Going to start the pull in the morning. The plan is to get it out and prepped for a trip to the machine shop Monday.

Didn't take a lot of pictures today, But the engine is out. I will prep it tomorrow and then drop it off at the machine shop Monday. Hopefully it wont be down too long. I didn't do a leak down or compression test. The valve stem seals are defiantly leaking, and a little bit of oil/carbon in the intake but not that bad.

Just out of curiosity, not knowing much about the newer Land Cruisers - How much would it cost to do this rebuild the way you are doing it? (what I mean by that is pulling it out and prepping it yourself vs turn key job at a shop.

Are you doing a full rebuild or an overhaul?

New OEM Toyota goodies or aftermarket?

Thanks

John Stumbaugh

by prepping it, I mean pulling the studs for the intake/exhaust from the head and removing oil cooler, distributor and other accessories. I will take the long block down to the machine shop and then pick it back up completely assembled with a warranty (new pistons, rings, seals, and bearings). I just need to mount all the accessories back on and reinstall it. i'll use oem gakets for the ones I replace, not yet sure what the machine shop is using. will find out more when I drop it off and talk to them.

Eric, I would do like i said and buy your own gasket set from the dealer and provide it to the shop. Just what i would do to make sure i knew what head gasket and the likes that they used. But again that is just me.

I would strongly encourage you to do this. There are some good aftermarket gaskets like RimFlex but there are also some horrible ones. If you don't have the expertise to know, it may be a pain later. I don't know jack about the 80 but on any motor rebuild there are better choices than others. Sometimes stock is not best but on a Toyota this is often not the case. Drink the cool-aide, get the Toyota stuff!

Don't forget to prime the motor when you put it back together.

Good luck!

it's almost ready to pickup from the machine shop. They did bore it .020 over and will deck it just a little to clean up the block in the inward side of #6 and #1 cylinders where the head gasket failure. Well I did pick up a factory head gasket and got it to them. Overall the engine was pretty clean for having almost 300k on it. Got the injectors back today from RC engineering, all cleaned up and ready to go again. soon..

here are a couple pictures from the pull.

Great Progress! Keep up the momentum!

Prime the motor, change the oil after the first 30 minutes, then again after a few hours, then at 500 and 1500.

Yes, I am paranoid but I've never had a problem with a motor. ;)

Ask the machine shop what kind of oil they want you to break in the motor with.

I always use a special non detergent oil for break in but you should check with what the machinist.
