so, the fact that I regularly use my torch and my welder on my rig, on the frame, with the fuel hoses inside the frame....that would make you nervous...

;)

99% of welding is practice....you never can do enuf. Another small part is knowing when to walk away...I have occasional days that I couldn't weld diddly without problems....back the next day and something changed...likely in my head, but stepping back does wonders.

It also said never to hold the bottle horizontally. The gas supply place I bought the welding outfit from stuck the bottles into the trunk of my Honda Accord for me (laying down obviously). I of course didn't learn the horizontal thing until I got the gas home.

I was able to succesfully weld some metal together with the OXY/AC stuff, but I haven't used it in many months now as I am just too darned scared of it.

It's OK to ship acetylene on it's side, but you should stand it up before you use it. Acetylene has liquid acetone in the bottle, and if you run it on it's side you can actually get acetone coming out (NOT GOOD) (can also be forced out at over 15PSI)

If you are afraid of blowing stuff up, (and even if you are not) go get yourself a set of flashback arrestors. These are NOT the same as check valves. They go on your oxygen and acetylene lines, and will melt closed if you have a flashback, stopping the explosion from getting inside your regulator andt hen bottle. If you ever hear popping going down your hose, DROP THE TORCH AND RUN LIKE HELL!! (different from popping at the tip!)

There are many cases of rednecks blowing themselves up. They showed us many many pictures in school.

All I can say is "GET FLASHBACK ARRESTORS!!!!!!"

HTH.

Oxy acetlyene is a fun thing to play with, and once you get it down, TIG is much easier to step up to.

The only welding I ever did for a living was muffler pipe with OA. After that TIG welding was easy. Same basic technique, but more control with the foot pedal.

millerwelds.com sell a student welding package for $25 and it comes with like 8-9 books. Get a free denim jacket with purchace of welder. I am trying to learn how to use it by cutting and tacking my metaltech (Iwill have a pro finish welding it). I need more practice before the bodywork begins. Check out paintucation.com for paint and body work dvd's
