I am going to be making an interior spare tire mount today. If I am going to be tac welding inside the back of my 80 do I need to disconnect the battery?

Doing some more chassis welding right now too...and from my search there are differing opinions about this. However given there is no downside to disconnecting the battery and its quick and easy to do I just don't understand why you wouldn't disconnect the battery(s) anyway. The other concern, of course, would be the ECU's...which would require significant time to disconnect.

IMHO this is the key ingredient: Make sure you have a nice clean/solid ground located as close to your arc as practical to keep the ground path from wanting to wander ;) And avoid HF TIG.

Depends on the process. For tacking purposes with a MIG, probably will be fine. TIG or Plasma cutting with HF, you really should disconnect the battery and other items of importance.

However, I'll state that I disconnect everything I can easily reach once I plan to touch any type of cutter or welder on my truck or car. Takes only a few minutes.

Plus, it gives you a chance to clean those battery terminals that I always seem to forget to clean every time I say I'm going to do it...

if you have sensitive devices such as alarm systems or stereo .. better to disconnect your batts .. ask me how I know .. :frown:

Thanks for the input guys. I used a stick welder because thats all that my buddy has in his shop which is better than nothing at all. I will post pics as soon as its done!
