anyone know anything about these two welders?

  • .030 in. (0.9 mm) contact tips
  • 8 ft. (2.4 m) work cable with clamp
  • Sample spool of .030 in. (0.9 mm) self-shielded flux cored wire

I'm sure there's some other things i am missing between the two and the fact that one is new in box from a official supplier vs a used one i found and needs to be shipped to me.... the price is the same to me but the catch is the 140 is used and likely wouldn't be under warranty, and I'm really having a hard time figuring out how much I'm really losing out if i just go with the new one for peace of mind...on the other hand are these welders from hobart pretty robust? any chance i need to worry about a used unit? how much does that extra 10A net you really and couldn't i make up for it with another pass?

Thanks for the help!

I just got the 140 top shelf, tiny amount fo research and practice it will make you a welder, own an 80?/ buy a welder. JMO

I also have the Hobart 140. I like that it runs on 110v. I believe it says it can zap up to 1/4" on one pass but that is optimistic. I'd say 3/16 is it's limit on 110v.

but regardless it's been a great welder. I've used it on dozens of projects on my vehicles and around the house....

Im welding 1/4 in no prob with 140 and using MP flux core you can bolster any welds you think wont cut it.

I bought the 140 over a year ago and have really enjoyed using it. The advantages over the 130 are the additional tapped voltage setting (5 total) and the upgraded wire feeding. Coupled with Lincoln 211 flux core it can put down some very nice looking welds with very little splatter. Easily upgraded to gas as it includes the regulator.

Look at the duty cycles first and formost. That determines the amount of time you can weld in a ten minute time frame unabated. The higher the duty cycle the longer you can weld.

Which is nice to know. However, how long you can continuously weld on your work piece depends a lot more on its size. You can only apply so much heat before you start expanding the metal and you end up with junk. If you spend the money on a decent unit, like a Hobar or Miller you will have more than enough duty cycle. I would only be concerned with duty cycles if I was doing production level welding on multiple pieces at one time. Or maybe if I was welding together bulldozer blades.

My point being don't buy a cheap welder.

Agreed. My first was a HF flux core 110, it sucked. The 140 Handler is a much better unit. Especially for someone who is going to be learning, you need to have something descent so you know that its you and not the welding rig that's causing the issues o_O

Miller 211 or Lincoln 210 don't mess around with the 110v welders if you plan on doing garage welding. The Lincoln can be expanded to do DC tig. The new miller 211 has auto set feature now for Co2 and C25. Hobarts are good, they are Millers made a bit cheaper.

I had several 110v welders including being only able to use my old 211 on 110v because I lived in a townhouse before. Sucks preheating welds and cleaning up and prepping surfaces to prevent splatter from flux core. Both welders are dual voltage. Buy online from reputable places and get free shipping and no sales tax.

I have the Hobart 140. Its a great welder.

But if I had to do it again I'd go for a dual voltage, probably the Hobart 180. For a novice welded the 140 is not good for structural strength welding. By structural I mean sliders, bumpers, frames etc.

you can do so much more with the new 215 .. it's really impressive ..

215? I haven't really looked at machines anymore after I bought a Tig. The argon gas alone I paid for already cost more then the welder.

I do watch Jodys videos and other stuff. The Thermal Arc stuff is pretty nice. Is the 215 the Thermal Arc?

Your in Panama I'm sure you feel my pain about the welding gas prices.

Kinda makes me glad I bought the 140 Hobart 2 years ago instead of springing for the 211 like I really wanted. For $400 more you get the ability to TIG, that's pretty nice.

^^^^^^^^ Agreed. Love my 211

Buy a Spool Gun also. Get a bottle of pure Argon and you can weld aluminum as well.

I got Lincoln squarewave 200 for doing aluminum. I was looking at buying the spool gun for the 211. I heard mixed reviews. What's your thoughts on the spool gun. Still trying to get more proficient with tig.
