Hey guys, I’m back a few short weeks later with a new mystery for the only unreliable land cruiser in the world, my 2008.

After driving on the highway for an hour or so, if I get on the throttle like to pass another car or merge onto an on-ramp, I get no power. The transmission will downshift a couple gears and the rpm will go up and I get zero power. If I try it a few times or just continue driving normally for a while I’ll get a flashing check engine and my #2 cylinder misfires. When I stop and park it for a while it will start back up no problem and drive normally for another hour or so until it all starts back over. Mechanic suspected a bad coil on the #2 cylinder but replacing that didn’t change anything.

If I drive like a grandma it will drive normally for a couple hours but then when I have to go up a hill or need a little extra power the engine will bog down and I have to back off the throttle.

Any ideas?

Engine light on? Pull the code.
Yeah sorry I wasn’t clear. All I get is cylinder 2 misfire when I pull the codes. And that’s only if I catch it when it’s on. If I shut it down too long it won’t show any current codes.

Did you change the plug and the coil?

Would it run normally for an hour plus before having your problems? That’s what’s baffling me.

In town, never seemed to have issues. On the highway, if I tried to pass someone or got on the throttle, it would go into limp mode and basically shut down. Like a fuel issue. Sometimes I could wait a few minutes with the engine off, and it would reset and run normally the rest of the day. On occasion, I had to pull a battery cable to get it to reset. Didn’t always show a Cylinder 2 misfire, but that was most common. Dealer has had it since beginning of May sourcing parts. Broken valve spring, 2 bent valves and a head that needs to be replaced so far. 99% of the time, it ran like new. I am the only owner and it has always been serviced.

My 2014 had the same symptoms. Ended up being a broken valve spring.

Ooof. That sounds painful. How much $$ are you into the repair at this point?

Thankfully I purchased a 7 year 125K platinum warranty. No deductible and they are paying for the rent car. Going to be about 4K just in rental before its done. I have no idea what the repair bill will be. They wanted me to pay to replace the remaining valve springs on that side, and that was about $900. So that might be a decent reference point. That has dropped some for me as they have found more wrong to cover under warranty.
