Couple of nights ago found a weird “liquiid glob” on garage floor

after investigating looks like it is coming from driveshaft that sits above exhaust - essentially where the front driver door ends (middle of car)

any ideas?

Recently grease your rear driveshaft?

That is coming from the slip yoke on the rear shaft, but it seems like the grease has separated into the solid and liquid components and only the liquid part is making it out. Usually something resembling more complete grease gets slung out onto the bottom of the vehicle and exhaust in a plane roughly lining up with that point.

Yep. Grease. Probably too much grease in there and the grease is sieving under pressure.

I did a 2100 mile trip in dec/jan offfroading

greased it after that

Makes sense that is what it coming out

usually bottom is all dirt

maybe since its clean i can see it

Nope, it’s your head gasket. Time to replace.

Interesting. If that's the oil separating from the viscous base of the grease and coming out the seal, something odd is going on. In that last photo of post #9 the drip is remarkably clear for oil. Incompatible greases? Many months between driving it? And what is the mess on the driveshaft in front (toward the engine) of the slip joint? Is that coming from above?

It definitely isn't oil.

It has a weird smell. On the floor its more "watery" on the shaft its more "greasy" <--- for for non mechanical terms. Hard to explain it otherwise.

The "mess on driveshaft" front is not coming from above checked it. Its greasy on that shaft only.

2100 mile roadtrip Dec/Jan.. Then regular maintenance. Its been driven about once a week (40 miles), since.

Head gasket jokes aside, this is weird.

What happened when you relieved pressure on the center zerk?

It's not weird. If you put grease under pressure, it will separate. You need very little grease inside the slip-yoke and you clearly have too much. You can take the prop-shaft apart at the joint (4 bolts at the pumpkin), but just remember to mark it with a grease pen, so you get the configuration correct upon re-install.

If you don't want to disassemble the yolk, you can just take the loosen the zerk right out, and cycle your AHC from high to low a few times (with a towel or catch pan underneath). Then put in back in "N" (from Low, not from High) and reinstall the zerk. You have too much grease in the slip-yolk. It needs very little.

I didn’t know that about grease. I guess that’s why it separates in my grease gun if I let it sit too long. I’ll start pulling the tubes out for storage between uses.

Great suggestion to remove the zerk and suspension cycle.
