i am one happy asshat. Will include a valve cover gasket in my inaugural order to CDAN. Thanks to everyone for their time. This board is an unbelievable resource!

In happier news, I did successfully switch my transfer case and differentials to Mobil 1, did the drain an fill on the AT and switched to Mobil 1 and changed my oil to Mobil 1 (0W-40).

Thanks again

Happy asshat,

That explains the 1 tablespoon of missing coolant. Next time, post a pic so we can ridicule you before you catch your own mistake.

When you're getting the valve cover gasket, might as well get a PVC valve and grommet at the same time. Probably some other things that C-Dan will suggest when the valve cover is off. I've heard that is the best time to go for the PHH as you'll have more space to get to some of the bolts on the back of the block.

Hi,

Mu 93 has 150k. Which is the best way to check if the HG is leaking? There are lots of stuff on both sides of the engine? The only part I can see is on the driver's side, behind the power steering reservour.
What do I have to remove to have a closer inspection?

Thanks,
Alex

Alex,

Uh, what country are you from? The driver's side in the US is very difficult to see due to the intake manifold, so I'm thinking you're Australia/Europe? Always best to use RH/LH vs "driver's side".

Doug,

I think I am making the same mistake again. Yes, I am in US (Bowling Green, KY) and yes, I meant the LH. Yes, due to intake manifold, it is very difficult to inspect it. Do I have to remove the intake?
I am getting ready for the fishing trip in Northern Quebec in the second week of September. I will be pulling a 17' boat plus some gear for 1500 miles and just want to make sure that i won't have any suprises.

Thanks,
Alex

Alex lives here in the US.

Alex,

If it were my vehicle, I'd do the following to allay my fears:

FedEx an oil sample to Blackstone.
Bring a coolant sample to a local heavy equipment dealer that routinely tests coolant (Caterpillar dealers usually have this ability).
Bring the car to a mechanic who can do the radiator sniff test with a machine to detect hydrocarbons in your radiator (means engine combustion gases are getting into it).

If the engine passes all three of these tests, I'd do the usual stuff to prep for a big trip (change all fluids/filters, check brake pads, belts and hoses) and focus on having a good time catching fish.
