Hey everyone,
So I am going to tackle the moonroof on my 98 cruiser.
I've looked on here and I cannot find any help for a 98. There's help for a 97 but that is a whole different thing.
So I have already completely removed my headliner, and am ready to begin. I'll take pics as I go. My symptoms is just the motor appears dead. And I also think the cables may be seized, but I will confirm that later when I get to that point.

So my 1st question is this-I removed all the visible bolts and nuts and there was something on the right side, about right where the B pillar is, that I cannot seem to undo.-Any ideas there?
2nd, is it required that I remove the glass before taking out the whole tray? if so how do I remove the glass?

The glass is easy there are 4 nuts under the plastic trim pcs on the inside. Grab the black plastic trim parts right next to where the headliner was and pull they should pop off then 4 nuts are visable remove those and its off.

Quick question - how was it to remove the headliner?

@smooth headliner was a long process but straight forward. 1st remove visors, be careful with clips that cover screws. Prying off the moonroof controller unit is easy with your fingers. There's 4 metal clips. Careful not to lose any or you'll need to special order at dealer. Remove light covers and unplug rear and middle lights. Then pull trim inward that surrounds moonroof opening. There are 5 plastic (brittle and will break) clips -2 in headliner midpoint and 3 in very back. More dealer special order parts. Then remove bolt covers and bolts from all grab handles. My bolts on the grab handle directly at the B pillar stripped. I just purchased an easy out and drilled them and got them out. The bolts were special order. It cost me about $40 for bolts and clips. Took a week and a half to get them. :(
From there starting at A pillar pull off trim, then along the headliner perimeter just keep tugging at the trip to get it loose. There are a few moulded indentations so just pay attention as you prise it away. I was able to get the liner out on one side enough to push it down and lift up and out on the other side. Hope it helps, let me know any other questions

Also/ REALLY IMPORTANT QUESTION: Is there any cross use for the sunoof motor. The motor is 750$ or I can get a Tacoma motor or Lexus 300 motor for about $50!!
But it seems the unit looks exactly the same (see pic)

Yes, you do have to remove the glass to get the cassette/tray out.

From my experience last year.

Does your motor not work at all? Try using it while disconnected from the assembly.

Mid-Atlantic Toyota Parts has the motor assembly (63260-60060) for $615.96 in case you really need it.
