How much wear at the tip of the transmission in put shaft
(where the pilot bearing runs) is acceptable? I am
rebuilding my tranny and have three input shafts. On
one, obviously the pilot bearing was seized. On the
other two there is some minor wear but no ridges.
So how much is too much?

All pilot bearings need to be slip fit on the input shaft. With that said, I would take the pilot bearing that you intend on using, and test fitting it, and dressing the shaft with emery cloth to size if it is not a slip fit.

If the shaft walks around inside the bore of the pilot bearing, you need a new shaft. I would bet that even the shaft that the bearing was siezed on, is ok to re-use.

Good luck!

OK. I'll go get a pilot bearing and check it out. One
of the input shafts is definitely a goner; there's about
a .012 inch lip where the old bearing ran. This is my
spare tranny so I'm taking my time, doing everything
right, I think. Thanks.
