Probably going to take the plunge into HG PM territory. Was thinking about all the things I should do at the same time and couldn't remember the conventional wisdom on the water pump....worth doing or wait until it shows signs?

154K with the original pump...how long do these usually last?

I really have not heard much about the 1FZ water pump failing and we have a few 300K 80s on the board.

there is not much to a water pump, an impeller, some bearings and a seal. ushaully the housing and impeller will be fine as long as the coolnt is kept up with, the bearing will eventually fo therfor killign the seal and leaking but it seams to take a long time.

There was a thread here where a old pump was replaced as PM, the new pump was said to have quieter bearings,

how much is a new OEM pump from Dan? if it is reletivley cheap and you are in there and want to change it, sure why not, not much labor. If it is expensive well I would maybe inspect it wile you are there and replace only if suspect.

I think it is $130.

It seems these things don't all of a sudden just die...they fail over a few hundred or even thousand miles. That has me thinking I'll wait.

Then I think about being on a 3,000 mile trip with an old water pump...

i say no. it's not on the way in and if it ever goes you can change it without removing the head provided you have ninja skills.

yeat at $130 I would put that PM $$$ into something with a higher failure rate.
