Do I really need this specific SST or will any generic pulley holder like this work? Seems like I could make something out of a flat steel bar and a couple machine bolts. Would a strap wrench work to hold the pulley? If I loosen the bolts before I take the belt off will the belt hold the pulley?

I did it with the patent pending “Shove A Screwdriver Through The Bolts In Such A Fashion That It Impinges The Rotation Of The Pulley” method. Works great for removal, getting proper torque specs on the bolts was a bit tricky when re-assembling but was achievable. I’m on my phone or I would link it here, but there’s a video on YouTube of a guy doing the water pump in a Tundra that at least demonstrated the above-mentioned method pretty well. I’ll find it and link when I can get to my computer.

Ok, not the greatest demonstration after all. Starts at 3:03.

So just a large screw driver. Thanks.

the tool is fantastic but not necessary, i use a big screwdriver and a long ratcheting wrench to take the pully off and on. if you have a strap wrench that would work as well

Yeah, I use the screwdriver across the bolt heads technique too. Works fine, although not as nice as having the right tool.

If you use the screwdriver only do so on the nuts as they are contacting the face of the pulley. If they are backed off much it puts a bending force on the studs, and you don't want that.
