I have heard that its very bad to get your 4x4 into deep water because it can get in diffs and such. Is the 40 better than most at water as far as how they have built it. I just watched legendarylandcruisers and they are in some deep water. Have they done anything special for this. I know about the air box. How deep can a 40 safely go 1 foot 2 feet what ever????

Just curious Im just amazed at how deep these rigs are going

a lot of variables with water crossing, i don't think you could say any stock vehicle is better than the next for submersion though. a lot of modifications have to be made to accomodate for wiring, breathers, air cleaner, etc. i'd be careful crossing any type of water that totally submerges your tires.

the first step would be to put in breathers. theres an outlet on the top of the axles and t-case for when fluid expands, you just take a tube and run it from each breather into your engine bay or some where else that will stay dry. a snorkel is a good option but water proofing your dist. is key, once that goes under your "fawked."

although i've seen a bj40 completly submerged (no dist.) lol

just make sure you check your fluids as soon as you get home. if you let it sit over night and crack the drain plugs, the water will go to the bottom and you'll know right away if water got in there. if not, watch for the fluid to be foamy.

if it's really cold, don't let the rig sit with water in the diffs, it'll freeze and you can fawk up something else...don't ask how i know (a friend did that)

A mag pickup upgrade over points in the dizzy will go a long ways to keeping your engine running when you're in the deep stuff.

As the rest have said, install your breather extensions and you can take it up to the carb intake safely, assuming you've protected all the other inlets to the engine and such. I look at all fluids once I'm home after every crossing over the wheel hubs.

Also be careful if it dies when submerged, water can make it's way up your exhaust system a ways too. Prolly best to just tow it out once it's died if you're really deep, like above the exhaust manifold.

There's something to be said for variable of speed and distance too. I have crossed water as high as the top of the front fenders [about 3 feet deep] without contamination [normal axle breather extensions] I didn't speed across, but I kept a steady pace.;)

I know Mark W. has covered this a dozen times before, so I'd do a search for his posts in conjunction with 'water crossing'. I couldn't say for sure, but I think he's got more experience on that subject than anyone else here.

Hth

You won't find much from me on the subject of water crossings here on Mud.

And my old stuff that you can find floating around on the net could probably use some tweaking to keep up with my current opinions basd on further experience gained since then.

I look foward to the lessons learned article in TT. :D

a good idea from of a mate of mine, put soft airline up from diff to top inside of cab, rear tray, snorkel ( engine being diesel ) with some kinda petrol filter on top, just to be safe..and ive seen his 70 go through some seriously deep water. ive had my 40 in water a fair way up half doors and i have 3inch body lift and 36's on.. for heavy truck, she almost felt like it was going to float.. its the slight bow wave ya truck creates that stop too much hassles... :D
anyways, get a 40!!! we need more of them around...

"How long can my rig hold up to this abuse?"

The FJ-40 had succumbed to poor driver judgment and was disabled in a dash-deep water crossing. :crybaby:
