I am looking at a 2004 LX and am trying to find out what I can about it. Below is a work entry from the Lexus website. Does R&R TRANS mean they took it out, worked on it and put it back in or replaced with new one? Any idea? Thanks

TRANSMISSION ASSEMBLY TOW TO SHOP TRANSMISSION WILL NOT SHIFT UP - COOLER HOSE LEAKED OUT FLUID AND CAUSED TRANS BURNT - 63184 TRANS FAILED CHECK TRANS AND FOUND LOW ON FLUID. HOSE TO RADIATOR SEEPING AND CAUSED LOW TRANS FLUID AND BURNT TRANS. REMOVE LOWER SHIELDS AND CLEAN UNDER CARRAGE FRONT TO REAR. REPLACE HOSE TO TRANS. FILL TRANS AND NO CHANGE IN SHIFTING. R&R TRANS,

New trans usually is what R&R refers to.

I wouldn't avoid it on that alone, things happen.

I think that is "remove and reinstall", but maybe it would be best to just call the dealer and ask.

If it's driving now and trans is operational, I'd say it was replaced. You'd need to see the repair order to see if it had a transmission on the bill. The repairing dealer should be able to tell you.

I say replaced. I write the same verbiage when I worked at the dealer.

I'd say it was "Removed & Replaced".

My experience in dealing with the local Toyota/Lexus dealers is that they would replace a bad transmission with a new or rebuilt unit, and not try to rebuild/fix the original transmission themselves.

If it drives fine, it's most likelyreplaced. Dealers don't mess with used parts. You could look underneath and see if the tranny looks newer with a new part # sticker.

Thanks guys. I haven't driven it yet but may do so.

What's the current mileage vs. mileage when repair done? Will this be your 5th LX?

Do any of the Toyota or Lexus dealerships rebuild transmissions? I was under the impression they simply replaced them.

I'd not let this stop me from purchasing as long as it was done by the dealer.

The tranny work was done at 63,184 miles. The current mileage is 100K. Yes, this would be my 5th LX. Right now, I have 5 chickies in the fam that need a vehicle and can't find a reason to get any other kind. However, I just took a quick look at the 2005 with the tranny work. It has too much rust on it for $21K...for me.

I wouldn't worry, likely was replaced with new. My 2002 had trans replaced before I bought it. Original owner towed it in with 114k, got tranny replaced then decided to just trade it towards a 200 series. I've got 185k now and all seems good.
