Ok not 80 specific hopefully someone can help me

I have this old winch i just put up on my truck, the winch works great on a battery by itself but hooked up to my battery with my truck battery cables and acc. hooked up too it with the truck shut off it smokes some wires! WTF is the deal, do i have a short in my trucks electrical and with the winch hooked up but not running why would this cause wires to smoke? could i have a wire crossed somewhere, hopefully someone can give me some incite!

what do you expect? it's a Chevy...!

:D

so, OK, maybe figure out (quickly) what particular wire is smoking, to start with? Better yet, check around with a multimeter?

if the "battery by itself" that gives no problem is not connected to the ground of the truck, that suggests you have a short on the winch truck wiring, either the cables or around the winch someplace, no?

i found a crossed wire, OOPS MY bad, still works well didnt do any damage to anything i hope!

http://www.ih8mud.com/tech/pdf/Warn-XD9000-wiring.pdf might help...

that's an 8274...older one, but at least it's got a solenoid...

LOTS of wires missing with the solenoids....not gonna be fun...

it still works well now that i found the bad connection, with it missing solenoid wires will this be hard on the winch motor? Enlighten me a little of how its not gonna be fun Woody, do you mean re-wireing the solenoids or??? thanks for the reply and moving to the designated area!

actually, looking closer, it's just an old design set of solenoids...the cross-straps are in place...

the xd9000 diagram should show you were the 4 ? wires for the switch connect up....

are you talking the remote control switch? it only has three wires, the green black and a wire that goes on the side here is a close up of my set up!

You're not missing any wires, this is what your solenoid pack should look like for that model:

There are only two wires (a black and a green). The solenoids are "bridged" in the center and on each outside edge with copper fitments.

If you need part #'s or info about rebuilding it...let me know.

I'll be posting my "rebuild" here in coming weeks.

Ok thanks alot! glad i got it all figured out, what i do need is a new cover for the solenoids pack to cover those wires up, i do have the soft cover over the winch but would like a hard cover for the front! let me know if you know where to get one!

Or any other Authorized Warn Parts distributor.

The part you need (Cover with hole) is #5992. I can’t tell you if its still available or not (in that configuration). Also, you’ll need the plug, cap and screws (be sure and tell them).

Flint.

Thanks!

:flipoff2:

But until we get another dd for the :princess: the cheby stays and the winch stays on it, maybe i need to get a arb with a winch plate! :D
