I'm looking at a 1995 Warn M12k. The seller bought it new and has used it a few times. He says hes a mechanic and just rebuilt the unit last month. He's asking 900 bones for it. Is this a fair price? He's gonna send me pics of gears that he took during the rebuild. I can post 'em once I get them. He says they looked new.

one might wonder why he rebuilt it if he only used it a few times?

He said he just wanted to know how it was doing. It has sat on a shelf for a few years.

You can buy a brand-new one on Amazon.com for $1,036, so I'd just do that unless he'll come down on his price another couple of hundred or so.

I bought a used Warn 12K winch off of craigslist a few years ago for $650.

You're going to get all kinds of answers to this question. The die-hard, made in the USA crowd on one side with their whole spiel on how you can't put a price on quality. On the other side, folks like me: cheap. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate quality. I'm just not convinced that there's much value in paying good money just to have a status symbol, meaning winches with the big W on them. With the use that most winches get today, and the quality of some Chinese made winches mentioned in other threads on this forum selling brand new for less than half of what Warn is charging, only you can answer your question. Obviously, you need other people's opinions to help you decide. So, IMHO, no it's not a fair price.

Because anything can wear if it is 17 years old and hasn't been used much. Let a Cruiser sit for 17 years and only crank it a few times and you'll have a few problems to fix.

$900 is too much, even if rebuilt, for a used winch when a new one isn't but $136 more according to 1911.

I'm thinking 9 Benjamins is too much too. Thanks for the input.

Do you like the warrenty and customer service with superwinch? If you know how does it compare to the big W?

as I don't even need to call 'em yet .. can't tell about customer service .. just about product.

Did you know that winch will came with albraight solenoid from factory .? didn't know any warn that came with ..

P.S. not a superwinch dealer .. just a very happy and well impress customer

What are you doing with the cruiser, that is a lot of winch and very slow, get a used 8274 unless you spend time in the mud a lot, cheers, Larry BTW too much money.

I just went down this road myself. I got a M12000 off Craigslist this fall. It had a brand new winch controller and synthetic line, never even spooled on. I opened it up on the spot for an internal visual inspection. The owner was originally asking $800 I offered him $500.

I used the fact that I had to buy a new hook(his was missing) and a fairlead for the synthetic rope. That and I could get a brand new Warn VR12000 or Superwinch Talon 12.5K for $600-$850. He saw my point and let me have it for $550.

I'm into it now for about $750 mounted with all new power lines, Gunnebo Hook, and Delrin Fairlead Rollers.

$900 is too much, but if its local to you I'd go and look at it. Make him an offer based on what you see. I don't see a new one on Amazon for less than $1400?

This is all great advice and input. I'll definitely pass on this winch then. The seller said he cant go much lower than 900 so in the ballpark of 600 is out of the question.
