I have just seen and enlarged a photo of a 1978 cruiser with hub lockers on both front and rear axels. Excuse me if I am ignorant...is this possible and would that mean it can be locked on all fours that way, would the axel be different. Is this nuts...'cause it sure looks like a locking hub sticking out the rear wheel as far as the front. Any thoughts here. Thanks in advance O wise ones.

You mean there were lockout hubs on both the front and rear axles, right? It's not an entirely uncommon mod on a FF rear axle. you get a custom axle shaft which is splined to fit the differential, and the lockout hub on the outside, but otherwise nothing to it.

Notice the similarities between the FF rear hub and the front axle hubs? Same wheel bearings, same bolt pattern on the lockout hub, drive flange, and rear axle shaft, etc....

I think there's some info in the 40 section FAQ too...

I just checked the site search, ( of course I would think of that after!), two threads spoke of an aftermarket product to make the rear axle full floating for flat towing, seems also to be a conversion to rear disc brakes, would be better with aisn hubs rather than warn. Well, they are on a 1978 FJ45 pick up I am considering buying. Its rough, but interesting.

Thanks Dan...so would the rear necessarily be disc brakes? A full floater would be handy for towing, 'cept the owner said the front would have to be on a dolly or flat bed to move because a brake cylinder was not functioning. The mods require a 79 axle or later, from what I read in the search site, less stress on the rear axle, etc., so this truck has undergone some changes for the best?

Hard to say exactly. The Toyota FF rear axle didn't come with discs, but they could have been swapped. Or it could be the aftermarket (Warn I think) FF conversion.

Canadian spec 45s generally had the Toyota FF IIRC.

All FJ45 I have seen have had FF rears. That's not to say they ALL came with them though.
