Hello, my friend has two Cruisers that each have a relatively new 8274 winch. He recently used one to pull someone out of a culvert. When he went to spool his line in the motor wouldn’t work. He needs that truck for a trip this week so I offered to swap the solenoid box from the good winch. Still nothing. I bypassed the solenoid box and discovered the motor was dead. I then removed the bad motor, installed the one from the good winch, and hooked the solenoid back up. Now the motor spins but it won’t engage the drum. It sounds like the clutch is disengaged even when the knob is pushed in. Any ideas? Thanks.

um.
if the motor doesn't engage, either the gear is not there or its stripped.
are these spline or keyway motors?
i assume you pulled the engagement knob off when you swapped motors or no?

Both motors have a splined shaft. I didn't touch the engagement knob, I just removed the motor and put the other one on. It felt like it slid back into position and the bolts pulled the motor face tight against the housing. I'm not the familiar with the 8274 and was wondering if there's something with the engagement knob that could have fallen out of position??

you dropped the engagement gears into both winches.
you need to pull the top off and retrieve them

OK,thanks. I was wondering if something like that could have happened. I assume there's a gear that needs to go back onto the engagement shaft and then put the top back on the gear box, correct? If so, I'll find an assembly drawing for the gears.

Got it. As you said, it looks like the gear that slides over the splined motor shaft has fallen into the gear box. Hopefully I can fish it out without having to remove the whole winch and bumper. Thanks for your help!
