Warn 8274 Rebuild....

Gday. After waiting many days for my 8274 to be delivered from an Ebay purchase, I finally had some time to start pulling her apart to service it. Upon removing some parts, I noticed the "brake pawl???" i think its called stuffed!!!! plse see the pic...
Everything else on this winch is in quite good condition apart from this component. Does this mean Im up for a complete new lower housing , if so how much would I be up for, or is this repairable in any way? Ive never rebuilt a winch before, yet am following the write ups here and Pirate. Any help is appreciated!

that part bolts on from the back. Get the serial# and call Warn. they will send you a new part for little $$$. get a brake rebuild kit while you are ordering its new friction material and gives you a chance to play with all the ball bearings in there!. While you have it on the bench pop the top half of the case off and clean out the sump. make sure there is no water in it and add the recommended amoutn of oil and seal.

Thanks Chet. Ive yet to take the bottom gears out to see how it is attached. So this actuall part bolts on from the inside of the housing?

I had a closer look today, and the alloy "stem" that had sheared, is a casted piece of the lower case.....

From what I can see, all it does is hold a retaining spring in place, so when I take it to the machine shop to "use a hydraulic press" to remove the brake assy, I'll see if they can tap a thread into the remaining alloy in lue..

Second, I loved Townsville when I visited in Jan '03...but the walk from the bars to the motel where this pic was taken...sucks...really sucks when your FUBAR, its steaming hot, and there's what looks to be a 2hr wait at the cab stand

winch rebuild

I love townsville apart from the bloody humidity at the moment. Sunday sesh's at the seaview hotel are great! Especially when its packed with plenty of hurgen flurgens over here on holidays )

This afternoon I was at the wreckers, pilfering some parts from a 60 for my 40, on a lovely 93 degree F 98% humidity day, and a friggen snake pops his head out of the manifold! . It was worth it seeing as I scored a pair of stainless steel headlight stone guards for $5

On the winch side of things, Ive read the thread on pirate, which inspired me to buy a second hand 8274. Ive just ordered the following from ARB:

Brake service kit,
Clutch assy,
lower service kit, and a new solenoid cover.

+ a new ARB winch bar!

Ive got the winch apart, with only the pinion and cam to go. Once done, its off to get powder coated, then put her all back together... The alloy shaft that was snapped (which retains the pawl spring), Im going to tap the housing, place in a long bolt / with a sleeve, so the spring can be retained followed by refitting the pawl. From what I can see of this snapped shaft, it does nothing but retain the pawl spring. I might tap a fill / drain hole into the housing as well. Once its all done, I'll post some pics!

Heres a pic of the motor and semi cleaned upper housing . and my snake enspiring headlight guards ...
Can wait to fill the gap between the rails with a bar & winch.

8274 rebuild

Whilst I was getting sick an tired of waiting for all of my parts to arrive to rebuild this winch, I got the casing powder coated. The pic doesnt really portray its true colour, yet it is a metallic dark grey / pearl. I'm slowly sanding the "cooling fins" where the powder coater couldnt mask them.

When I ordered all the new seals ect from my supplier via warn, they advised that they dont make decal kits for this winch? Does anyone in the states know if they are still made? Im after one that attaches to the top housing and the top end plate on the other side of the drum?

Warn sent me most of the decals for the 8274. Go to the USA web site and email customer service.

They will tell you what is available. In the mean time check out the photos of the new 8274-50 see if the decals you need are on the new winch. If so, they got em somewhere..

They sent me the "W" that goes where the remote plugs in and some of the warning stickers. They did not send me the long skinny sticker that goes on the drum on the port side (drum left). Happend that I don't need that one so Moot point.

You have got that thing lookin great. I saw one yesterday of 70s vintage that had the new motor off the -50 on it. Was a bolt on, guy had it on a 3/4ton GMC pickup, uses it getting firewood...says it is one pulling SOB...

Hammerite or rustoleum hammered paint look pretty good too, nice powder coat... looks factory.

just pulled my 8274 out of storage and am beginning a rebuild. is there a kit WARN sells for rebuilds? ive done some searching on their site and can't seem to find a kit. mine is in good shape, just want to rebuild and paint/coat
