OK, it is obvious that there are some pretty smart folks out there. Could someone give me a blow by blow lesson on how the Warn 8274 brake correctly functions and operates. My winch has no problem with "free spool" or power but the center ratchet ring does not ratchet around with the 2 outer rings when powering. I could really use a lesson so I can understand what it is suppose to do and how.

bare with me Cos i'm no expert! Does the ratchet ring have the brake material on either side between the two ribbed end plates? if this has broken down then the ratchet will not work.
When the ratchet is not working under power is there any load on the winch or is it just loose cable being pulled in? When there is a load on the cable and the brake is required A cam type action thingy happens inside the gearbox and pushes the plates together and it will ratchet this action seems to stay there until you power out, it will not engage again until load is applyied to the cable(not a great load is required but not sure how much)
Hope this helps and I am not leading you in the wrong direction
