Looking for a reliable toyota/lexus SUV with a third row under 15k with less than 150k. I'm not in a position to travel for purchase. I traveled to northern virginia once for a cosmetically very rough 4runner that was supposed to be perfect. Looking for something relatively clean with reasonable maintenance history within an hour drive. I'm open to LC, LX, GX, 4runner, and Sequoia.

What I have seen so far in the Richmond, VA area seems overpriced for the condition and or miles. The only thing I've seen that seems like a good deal is cosmetically fair without a maintenance history. Does anyone think this is a good deal?

Used 1999 Lexus LX 470 Luxury SUV 4dr SUV for Sale in Richmond VA 23060 NorthBrook Auto Sales Inc.

I drove by and was initially scared off by the cosmetic condition: clear coat peel on the hood, rust bubbles above the rear license plate, rough interior scratches a few light dents etc.

I figure it at least needs:
timing belt
transmission/transfer case/differential fluid changes
undercarriage and rear hatch rust remediation
paint correction
at least 2 rows new leather seat covers
aftermarket radio
steering wheel cover
new wheels/tires

I plan to do the work myself and this will take some time and probably 2K by the time it is all said and done. Does this sound worth it or should I keep looking. Am I just polishing a turd?

If the upper tailgate is rusty and crusty, you can be sure the underside isn't pretty.
Two accidents on the Carfax.
AHC system is probably shot.
Was the timing belt done?

Limiting yourself to the mid atlantic means you will be picking through a lot of rotten metal.

Our '02 LX was getting eaten up pretty good when we sold it in 2013.

$0.02

Thanks for the input, the underside was't as bad as expected. Surface rust for sure but no heavy scale. True it probably needs ahc delete. More $ ... No evidence of timing belt service ... I totally agree with your statement picking through metal rot ... Saw two 05 LX470s and a 4runner this week with heavy rust :(

It is literally 3 miles from my house and I think I could live with the higher miles but isn't 14k steep? What do you think is reasonable?

I'm just in the market for a 100-series LC/LX, so others on here might have more to say about it. It depends on the condition. From the pics, it sounds like it's in good condition and was well maintained. I have some pics of the undercarriage on my phone and they look OK too. You should go check it out.

LC's seem to be going (or people are asking for) more than LXs. If you don't have to have the ultimate offroader in the LX or LC and are just looking for a 3-row for hauling family, you'll probably find better bang for your buck in a used Sequoia or if size isn't that big of a deal, a 4Runner or a Lexus GX470, which you can find for less than the LC/LX. I personally love the style of the 100-series so i'm probably gonna buy one even though my X3 can get me most places I need to go. My second choice might be the GX, as they can be had for ~10K with around 100K miles.

Check out that LC and let us know what you think. You could probably get 'em down a bit since it was a trade-in.

Thanks, I am just looking for a family hauler ... ill check it out in the next few days and let you know. I should clarify that I'm looking for 08+ sequoia only and would lean towards lx>lc because I like the look and lx/lc > gx/4runner due to interior room. That said I cant find a 4runner or gx either in proximity anyway ... Looks like this lc is the best near me for now. I might stretch the search to 2 hours out for a rust free vehicle with maintenance documentation but that is going to be hard to find...

Hey aharlan001, another Richmond local here. Just to let you know... I also checked out that 05 LC just to drive and feel out the 100 series platform. I'm not really in the market yet (have a high mileage 3rd gen 4Runner that has had a lot of money put into it), but I can give you some of my reactions in hopes that they help you out:
  1. Lots of records on the truck recently. Check out the Toyota Owners page and punch in the VIN - the truck had the timing belt/water pump done recently, valve cover gaskets, hydroboost system, front right caliper replaced, new wheel bearings, etc.
  2. No body rust I saw. Tail gate is clean. Chassis has some patina on it, but nothing horrid. The muffler was replaced according to records due to being rusted out.
  3. Has KYB GR2 shocks on it. I didn't think the ride was that good... decently smooth but it wallowed around a lot and the brakes flat out sucked. Granted, this is my first seat time with any of these rigs.
  4. They touched up the leather on the driver's seat. Dye job it looks like. Appears nice now, dunno how it will age.
I feel your pain on the rust; I gambled on a higher mileage 4Runner that was 99% rust free versus dealing with a crusty lower mileage truck. Seems we're in the part of the country right in between the rust belt. NOVA trucks get lots of rust, NC trucks (and below) are spared that fate.

Good luck!

Thanks BackRoadSeeker, do you think the brakes just need the fluid replaced/new calipers/rotors or do you think it is something more? Also the ride quality is just how KYB GR2 shocks are? I'm going to take it for a spin. I need to get a feel for how these trucks ride. The only one I have driven was a LX470 at CL Hyman Wholesale. It had ?a bad ahc system? which caused the truck to bounce when turning :( it's the black one currently for sale, suspension aside there was a fair bit of rust and the body had quite a few bumps and bruises.

I don't know, it could just be the brake pads. I just know my 4Runner has WAY better brakes and those are known for being weak from the factory. It appeared the whole hydroboost/master cylinder unit had been replaced... so no doubt they had to bleed and flush the brake fluid with that. Best approach is to drive and see for yourself, for sure.

I drove by when they first listed it. It looked rough and had some soon to be rot underneath. I’m in the same boat. Been hunting for 4 months.

The blue 05 lc sold today ... Didn't get there soon enough, have any of you locals seen either of the lx470s that cl hyman wholesale has, interested in what you think about the rust...

Funny, I'm also in Richmond (thus the username) and now shopping for a 100 series. I have a 96 LX450 and have loved the reliability and ruggedness, but the seating gets very uncomfortable for me as a daily driver. I'm more willing to travel or deal with shipping if needed and the total price is right. My neighbor is also a used car sourcer for the Lexus dealer so I may go through him. Happy to share info with members here.

I ended up with a slightly rusty white 98 lc with 186k, bumper support rust hole and underbody holes behind the rear wheels. It has surface frame rust which is a little worse on the middle crossmember ... The body is very clean with very little rust on front of the passenger rear wheel only ... not sure if I'm going to get used to the underbody rust or fix this one up and move on to something else. Paid 5k, needs basic maintenance and has some slow leaks. I feel like I paid to much. But got tired of looking at beat up rusty vehicles for 10-15k ... :(
