VORTEC 5.3 or 4.8 to H55F, which one???

LOL...
The terms "Easy", "swap" and "Landcruiser" do not belong together.:D

I agree !!!

I'll contact the seller today, and probably will get that LY5 engine. Yes its a DBW throtle, and the good part it's complete including the AC compressor which I'll never use.

My plans are to bolt this to my H55F using Marks adapters, so I don't need to move the tranny. So headaches will be on the fuel plumbing and wiring that thing. I'll definatelly start a thread on it once I comence my work.

I thought I was going to buy a new engine, but it's not worth it considering all the accesories I need to buy, the amount of miles I'll drive it, and most important; the savings to get the adapters from Georg.

I'll post it up if deals goes through !

One more thing to keep in mind is using the manual tranny with the system that is designed to run an auto (if that is the case with the motor in question). Youll need to get the ECU re programmed somehow to allow it to run with the manual trans. Not sure how others have done it, but keep it in the back of your noggin.

Good luck and have fun!

re-programming of the PCM is basically mandatory anyway, and setting it up for a manual trans is one click. The 2007 might be a Displacement on demand deal, making it more complex, so keep that in mind. (harness mods, etc.). I'm sure it's not nearly as big a deal now as it was in 2007 when I put my 5.3 into my rig. (Paid $840 for the while motor with all accessories, harness, and PCM, 50k miles, and was clean)

I would NEVER get the 4.8. It's a de-stroked 5.3 and it shows up as a big lack of low-end.

P.S. Getting the transmission with the engine can make things A LOT easier, and trans-to-t-case adapters are more plentiful...

Good luck with your project, I hope to see it sometime!

CHICAGO: forgot to thank you for linking me on the chevy forum, and as for the harness and ECM I'll get it done trough Howell at one point.

ESKIMO: I was going to buy the 4.8, but a few friends suggested not to. After looking around, mainly on the net, found something that couldn't pass . Hopefully I'll finish this swap and other details by April of 2011.

As of this morning I commited to a no return policy between seller and my 40, and purchased the LY5, ended up costing me $1,400 shipped . I'll have it here by Wed. next week!
I hope that this Vortec doesn't play tricks on me.

Here's a Pic as of now:

Christ on a bike that rig looks GREAT!
Congrats on the purchase.
There are lots of harness guys out there I had found. Some cheaper than others. I an NOT any where near proficient with wiring. With that being the case, I went to the "top of the line" (IMO) with the howell harness. You pay a bit more for it, but lots of reputable builders here and elsewhere use them. I had read threads where folks had done swaps and spent years chasing down wiring issues. I figured that it'd be money well spent if it comes out right the first time for something like that.

Look forward to the build!

Thanks !
And don't worry I'm not a electronic scientist either, I rather spend some extra $ and get it done professionally with a good back up !

I can't wait for that engine to show up even though I can 't do a think for at least two months. Also very happy that I did not buy that brand new 4.8L which I was going to. ESKIMO is the third person who confirmed it.

I'll snap some pictures when it gets to my destination !

here are some pics of the 2004 5.3 vortech I stuffed into what used to be a fj40. I paid $900 at a reputable salvage yard. Mine was still in the yukon it came out off and i heard it run before I purchased. They gave me everthing i wanted for this price, and they pulled it. Some things to consider, i spent about $1000 for adapter from advanced got flywheel, clucth, and new bell for that. I cheated and bought the painless wiring. Best desicion i ever made. About $1200 but you get a new computer and plug and play wiring. They eliminate the expensive maf senser and replace it with a $10 air intake senser you can pick up at auto zone. I also got a cord to hook to lap top and software to tune motor included. This motor kicks ass. runs like a top. And is easy to find parts for. I am running an h42 trans with no problems also marlin 4:70 box. Be ready stong axels are the key when you run 40" tires with this motor. Good luck:beer:

Since it is DBW, make sure that you get the APP sensor (accelerator pedal position) and the TAC module (throttle actuator control). Given their OEM location, these are often not removed along with the engine and are a bit spendy if you have to purchase them new. The other option is to replace the throttle body with a older cable unit. Personally I really like the DBW system.

And please don't call the PCM an ECU or ECM:lol::lol::lol:

I only have experience with the trucks. For those, it is located on the firewall near the driver's rear corner of the engine bay.

Dacicci and Medusa; Thanks for the input !

Well, not too long ago received the LY5 and this is how it looks like.
Medusa, I guess you are right about the Module of the pedal. The only harness it was cut, but don't know if the small module attached to the harness belongs to the pedal.
Where's the APP sensor located, perhaps if not there I can call them and get since they still have the Silverado.

At least you got EVERYTHING!
Looks LIKE mine. The cowl is different, so I donno what's under there.
Friggin exciting.

Hope it all works out for you. If you google your motor they have plenty of chevy blogs showing wiring specs. Also step by step of people who have retained a stock harness. I just did not have the nuts to attempt so i took the easy way out.

Looks to be a nice set up Dan,hope it all goes well for you. Can't wait to see your rig finished. It's gonna be one of the best on the Island.

James

You have the APP pictured -- attached to the end of the accelerator pedal assembly. I can't tell for sure, but it looks like the TAC may be on the palette directly above the accelerator pedal.

Dacicci: I will not mess around with the electronics, I will contact Howell for them to do it ! sort of cheeting as well !

Medusa, I wasn't sure about the APP, but found a stamp on the pedal aasembly with "PP-GF50", thanks for confirming !

The Pedal harness was cut as you mentioned. The salesperson though that small Module you described on my picture is the TAC module, but it turns out to be a different one, perhaps for the Tranny (BKYNNHK070511154). Haven't checked?. It's seems like IV generation Vortec have revised the wire harness from previous models.
After some confussion with parts, the yard will look for the pedal module which has two plugs: one for the APP, the other for the main harness! I hope I'll get an asnwer from him today!

Also found that APP from vortec's 2006-2007 are the same.

OK; disregard my previous post with the TAC Module issue:
The yard called me today and they've looked in the donor truck for the TAC Module and turns out that the cut wire harness goes directly to main WH. NO TAC MODULE ????
So then Chevy at one point in 2007, made TAC Modules vanish by them hooking them up directly to some other source that I'm not sure. Then called Howell and they've confirmed this ! 2006 models have TAC modules and they are interchangable from 4.8 to 5.3 Vortecs.
What a pain finding all this electronic issues !

I'll start another thread as soon as I collect parts for this convertion and all the info I can learn by doing this swap!.
I have googled LY5 Convertions and there's not much out there!

there are two or three entire engine swap threads on the 60 sectoin about 5.3 engine swaps. Goes through the process from day one. Be prepared to deal with some electrical issues... Its worth the money to deal with someone who knows what they are doing...for your harness and PCM programming. Also who can advise you on what you can get away with not running and what you need to have. Make sure you understand what you need to get a VSS to function.

Jim's performance did all my wire harness work for a fair price, and it's been flawless for 3 years so far...

Not a big fan of Howell, but the last time I talked with them was ~12 years ago and they didn't have a clue what they were doing. Since they're still in business, I suppose that has changed though.

The 4.8 is a turd and sucks gas with little power. 5.3 has good overall power and gets good fuel economy. 6.0 has more power and loves fuel.

Don't pay more than $1K or so for a 5.3 with normal miles. There is one for sale locally for $1K with 30K miles.
2005 5.3l 33k complete w/PCM,harness, DBW pedal - Norcal-LSX

Install a used Z06 LS6 cam $150 or less, port the TB $65, and install some headers with a tune and you will get an easy 375hp+. The stock 5.3 cam is dead beyond about 5,000rpm. Z06 cam loses no power down low and is good to 6500rpm or so. These are great little motors with people making 600rwhp+ from them with these mods and larger injectors only..... and a turbo.

There is a place near me that will label and modify your engine harness to make it easy to swap into any vehicle. It is $175 I believe.

I have built LS1, LS7 powered vehicles and now a turbo LS2 shooting for 1000rwhp. They are great engines, parts are affordable and abundant. Kick ass cyl head design, superb ignition coil per cylinder setup, and strong blocks/cranks. Production blocks/cranks with better rods/pistons are good to 1000rwhp+.
