Morning all-

Hypothetical question:

If you were going to build your "ultimate" FJ25/40/45 back in the 1960s for off-roading, (and money wasn't an issue), what kind of accessories were available?

I already have what appears to be a period correct aftermarket bumper, widened steel wheels, and am entertaining the idea doing a mild restomod along those lines, and am looking for ideas.

Also curious if anyone knows anything about this bumper? Many early Scouts and Willys came with dealer installed diamond plate bumpers, curious if it was through a dealer or strictly aftermarket.

Thanks, D

Good eye-I did a quick search on the Google and, not surprisingly, it brought me back to IH8mud...

The bumper on landpimp's 1965 is very similar (about 1/2 down the page) I wonder if it is a west coast thing?

Who made this bumper?

While lock-rites makes a locker for the coarse splines now when these were new Torsen made a diff for the coarse spline axle. Patented back in 58. Not sure the history but a custom hub was used on the rear axle to keep the axles from sliding out since these can not use a C clip. I've read these don't hold up to large tires. But back in the sixties 31X10.50X15s were about as big a tire and most were running.

Somethings that come to mind...

Hollywood accessories under dash mounted ashtray was popular

Also HA sun visors and clip on visors

Offenhouser dual carb intake

External power booster

Eaton heater (or oem clam shell)

Under dash mounted toyota radio

Side body mounted Jerry cans

Anything Conferr

Anything Hickey

Have a Kayline soft top and doors on one of mine. Home made channel iron bumper replacing the thin stock bumper. #16 in count had a old Willys chrome bumper when I bought. It went to a Willys guy for one of his.

Let's not forget the always present gun rack! Cant remember any of my 45's without a rear window gun rack( rubber coated) or a dash and footwell bracket! Oh and some big chrome rc mirrors fastened sheet metal screws!!

Con-ferr accessories come to mind. Front tool box, back bench seat, grill guards, aux gas tank, etc. They were located in my home town and I had an ass load of their accessories on my 40 at one time or another. I still have a few.

i threw a set out a few months ago...

My 65 pickup had a set of tinted plexiglass visors. Same with my 70 FJ40. Those were attached to a overhead tray. I know I have the tray and visors. Tray is in the garage with another tray. Other set believe is still floating around. Not sure when the factory visors started but my 9/64 pickup had the treaded holes. Now that I think about have a 61 FJ40 with them and possibly a FJ25.

good info, I appreciate the input. Just wish I would have kept that pile of 1960s Fourwheeler magazines I threw out...

Good to know the classic Con-Ferr roof rack would have been available. I havent seen a Con-Ferr brush guard for an FJ40 before.

My 47 Willys truck also has period-correct parts-including a non-functional 8-track and uber-cool spot-light/hunting light. Also works great to blind tailgaters.
