The frame vin is only a partial of the firewall vin. If I remember right the frame vin give you an idea when the frame was built. The frames can be built years before the chasis. Dan at American Toyota is very knowledgeable about vin info. He goes by Toyota dan on the forum. I hope this is helpful. I've have been arguing with Toyota of America that there is only partial vin numbers on frame but they really don't know much about the older cruisers. I gave them my vin number on an 83 fj40 and they tried telling me it was a carrola.

Dan = Cruiser Dan or Cdan

PM sent.. any left?

I have to figure this out.. my driver side door VIN seems different from my frame VIN. But, once I get it sorted out, could I send you a pic, and the VIN info? Would you do this casting for me? Obviously for a fee. :D

Otherwise, I'll just take the blank plate. Much thanks..

The VIN number on the passenger side frame rail is the full VIN of the vehicle. That number should match what is on the plate on the driver side door frame. If the plate differs, the body has been swapped or someone changed the VIN tag on the body.

That isn't true if the vehicle is a 81 or newer. DOT says a VIN has to has seventeen digits starting with the 81 model. This was a US thing not the world so the whole seventeen digits are not stamped on the frame. Also the same reason Carfax is worthless on older vehicles.

I know about the newer trucks, I was referring to ARC1's 71 in his signature that has mismatching VINs.

Yeah.. so my VIN's don't match. :hhmm:

My driver side door frame VIN plate corresponds with May 1971.
My frame corresponds with June 1966.

Does this matter?

I'm registered with DMV as a 1971, which is what the truck looks like from the body.

I have 83 and 79 fj40 the vin on the frame is only a partial there aren't enough numbers to make a complete vin on frame.

He has been with Toyota for a very long time he can break down a vin and tell you everything about the rig. He could tell by vin when the body/chassis was manufactured and that it had factory ac on the 83 and the vin on frame showed when the frame was manufactured about one year earlier. Frames and body were manufactured at different times up to years apart. He also told me 17 digit vin # weren't mandatory til 1981. My 75 fj40 I used to own the firewall and frame numbers were different also. MY local Toyota dealer has some emails from marlins off-road with pics of the frame showing that frame numbers are shorter than 17 digits and Toyota replying that there is no way that that is correct even with pics if the frames. So the frame and firewall may not match from what I understand from a long time Toyota parts guy. You could call cruiserdan and find out from the master and maybe he could post a reply to put this to rest.

What is The Cost of a laser etched plate? I did large batch of these 3 years ago or so that allowed me to get them cheap. They even let me have some smaller here and theres for the same price. But now that they are just doing a few at a time fo me they cost more. Sorry guys. Made in America though.:meh: They are $50 each......still half the price of some I spotted on ebay that are not lasered.

They went out middle of last week(I think Wednesday). I am in Oregon, and if I remember right, yours were sent to Miami, Florida. Should be any time.

All of you other guys that were closer to me....you should have them by now too. Post up pics if you can. They look so nice in a restored cruiser.
