I run a lot of trails. For a sprint I would average 5-10 miles a week, preferably 10-15 miles/week. I run the longer distances so I try to get in 20-30 miles/week. Crossfit is an excellent way to train for one of these type of events. Anything that uses body weight exercises. Lots of movements, little rest in between. You have to get used to having your heartrate up. I have done a lot of these races and most of the major ones. Spartan races are my favorite. They are the best obstacles, best race organization, toughest/funnest races overall. The post race beer selection could be better They only had budlite.
Once you finish one of these you really do feel like you can do anything. But get used to getting beat by girls. There are some awesome athletes that are women. The first and third place finisher were from APP State. Go Mountaineers!
Here is a video my GF took of me finishing. I'm in the blue shirt. Amazingly tired!!!!
Looks like fun. Is the closes one in SC or VA or do they have one in NC?
I did my first off road tri this past June and it was awesome. 1/2 mile swim, 5 mile trail run and 10 mile mountain bike. Run kicked my butt.
I have done 6 hour and 8 hour Adventure races but really want to do an obstacle race. In the 6 hr race we ran, mountain biked and canoe'd. In the 8 hr race, mostly mountain biking (33 miles on fire roads) in Umstead. We mapped out our route with a compass and then took off to each check point to punch a sheet with a unique punch type device. After the 8 hr race, I did not feel good for a week. It was crazy and I was crazy tired.
I would have a lot of training to do but that is needed this day in age. I have to have something to plan for and train accordingly.
Have you done a tough mudder? I ask because I did an obstacle race in the mountains, 2 years ago and it was just trail running and the obstacles were lame.
3:20 is a very respectable time. Good job! A friend of mine was hoping to finish in 4 hours.
I participated in the USMC Mud Run in Colombia the same weekend as the Spartan Race. The Mud Run is only 5.2 miles and is team based. There are several obstacles that would be impossible without help from a team. We finished 60th out of over 1600 teams. I see similar obstacles in the video but no where near the mileage.
We talked to a few people who were competing in the Spartan Race after the Mud Run.
Yes, I have done a Tough Mudder. I did not like it. The course consisted mainly of running up and down a ski slope with some obstacles thrown into the middle. I thought it was kind of lame to design the course that way. Also, I didn't like that they had no results at all because it wasn't a "Race". Tough Mudder gives me the impression that they are just trying to cash in on the craze that they arguably built, however you will find extreme points of view between Spartans and Mudders. They pretty much hate each other.
There is a Spartan Sprint at the US National White Water Center in March 2013. I did the sprint this year and it was TOUGH! I woud love to get into adventure racing. I have volunteered at an event before.
I have not done the USMC Mud Run because I can't seem to find other people dumb enough to do it with me. Maybe one day but I have heard excellent things about it.
I run approx. 1:45:00 half marathons on trails without obstacle, so 3:20:00 was a long time for me to be up and moving.
Hey, I hit 100 posts. Sweet.

My brother and I did a Run For Your Lives Zombie run in May. It was awesome and fun. More like speed work than a run. It was really hard to get away from those Zombies!
