I always try to call a few Vets that I know or have worked with over the years to voice my appreciate in-person. Here's a few stories from the recent past;
A developer I used to work with was a Marine in Desert Storm 1 and found out I was into 'guns and stuff' from a few linked .50's I had on my desk at work. He said he was over there in a mobile communications HMMMV out in the middle of nowhere when he heard firing and explosions, so they hiked up to the top of the nearest sand hill. From there, he said he saw A-10's making runs on iraqi tanks, along with M1's and Bradley's shooting up the Iraqi tanks from a distance. He said it was like watching a movie and it was sureal with the explosions and then feeling the thump from a distance.
Another guy was a Marine in Desert Storm 2 and spent his time in a military intelligence unit in the desert, but his stories were mostly about getting coffee and sleeping under desks when they'd get sequestered for an exercise and couldn't leave.
Another guy I know really well joined the Air Force during Vietnam instead of waiting around to get drafted, gave up on college and went to Basic, extended training, and then on to missile technician at Davis-Monthan AFB, Tucson. He went on to the Philippines for 4 years, became a Sr. Missileman and has shared a lot of funny stories from working in the missle shop - including one in which they were told to take Formula 409 and a rag and wipe off the radar nose cones of AIM9 Sidewinders and AIM7 Sparrow missiles, along with AGM Mavericks which had tree sap smeared all over the front of them. The story was that the F4 pilots would pass pretty low trying to avoid SAM activity and the underslung munitions would hit the treetops on occasion.
That last guy is my dad. My very favorite veteran! Happy Veteran's Day to those who served,
