the stereo in my '97. My LS 400's Nakamichi is still the best stock stereo in the world ;) ...but this one ain't bad at all!

yes, me too. I don't get all the complaining about the speakers and all. Sounds just fine to me. (Not to mention that if you can hear the radio at all, it means you are on asphalt anyway, which ain't good... :D )

The front-door speakers on my 96 sounded bad (sound was not crisp and clear). This happened when I turned up the volume (about 45% of max).

I took out the speakers to inspect and found that the speaker cone was made out of paper and it was coming apart around the edges of the speaker.

I replaced with a pair of Alpine SPS-130 (5 1/4", 3-way speakers, $55/pair) and the sound was much better than before. I listen to CDs and FM-stereo and I can definitely tell the difference in sound clarity.

I also replaced the rear-door speakers with the Alpine SPS-100 (4", $49/pair), but replacing the front-door speakers made much more of a difference than replacing the rear-door ones.

Next on my list is to replace the puny sub-woofer located in the rear panel behind the 3rd row seat.

I have a hard time hearing my stereo if I'm ON the asphalt! The MTR's just hum away,so I have to crank it up, it's a constant battle. When I come to a stop, I have to turn it back down, and so on..

Had same problem

I had the same problem with my '96 speakers coming apart. Sounded like absolute crap. Did you have to mod anything to get those speakers in your rig? I really wanna replace mine soon and I need to find some that are an easy fit. What're you thinking about for the rear 'sub-woofer'? Did you replace your stock receiver/cd player and if so, with what?
