Hi folks. I finally got my dream car, 1993 LC. I got a slight click in the drivers side, so I bought a new birfield and seals. I want to get it replaced asap as I am driving from Maryland to Vermont today(no choice). I did make some calls and do some digging on here and other sites, which brought me to the conclution that it is HIGHLY improbible that the birfield will break on the highway.
I normally would take the time to do it myself, however being ill prepared tool/time/experience wise, I am asking if someone in VT who is familiar with this task to do it. From what I have read it only takes a little more then a hour a side.....

I will be on the road after about noon or so today, give me a call on my cell 302-331-4174 if interested.

Thanks and it is great to be part of your group.

John

By the way by a couple of bucks I mean talk to me make a offer.... reasonable of course cause otherwise would go to the dealer.....:)
I will be in Vermont Sunday sometime, need to have this done by Tuesday at the latest as I have to go to New York for work, then back to VT.

that's a pretty tight schedule for ordering all the parts and doing a (conservative) 8 hour job. If it's only clicking you could put it off some and get a better plan together.

If you think the dealer will do a competent job and you're only looking to save a few bucks than I'd just take it to the dealer with this schedule.

I already have the parts, Just need someone with tools and know how on Monday or Tuesday.

cruiserparts.net Birfield, seals,a drive adapter. I was going to get them from longfield but the tech there says if I use it on road alot, but off road sometimes I should go with one of the japan made birfields, as longfields are softer and will not last as long for on road apps.

I doubt you have all the bits and pieces to do the job correctly. There needs to be 4 trunion bearings and clips and so on in that parts bin.

I'd be more than willing to help you out but I can't make that time table and I live 2 hours from White River Junction in Groveland MA.

I'd call CruiserDan at 800.432.6668 and have him fill in the blanks on what parts you have on hand, first. Then formulate a plan of attack.

You probably have plenty of highway miles left on that clicking birf.

I'll be on site in Hartford CT next week if your driving through and need a break.

K, I will feel about a thousand times better after it is replaced though.... I hope I got all that is required for the replacement. I want to repack the other side too...
I got the birfield, the driveline adapter, the seals, and a new dust cover. I asked the girl I spoke with at cruiser parts.net what all I needed and that looks to be complete....
Tried to call Dan but got vm so I left a message.
Almost did it myself yesterday after reading that it took most folks like 1-2 hrs a side.....

I dont mind driving out of the way, have to go to Burlington and Monpieler, and I have to be in Middletown, NY and Syracuse for one full day each before Friday.....

Thanks

The thing is, the standard seal kit form Toyota doesn't even have all the right parts in it. So unless you go to a very knowledgeable source who has taken the time to fill in the blanks on what is needed you will come up short.

I'd take a few minutes and pull the square plug form that side and get a sense of how much grease is in the knuckle. We do this by sticking a coat hanger down in there. It should be 3/4 full and if it seems low you could add some to tide you over until the full repack.

It looks like I am leaving here a little late but can make it to you no problem on route to Vermont.

Let me know about Sunday. I will leave at a aproprate time from here to come straight there instead of Vermont first.

Thanks

I got the green light from the wife. I don't think I have time for a full rebuild but I'm sure we can get that birf in for you.

Let me know about when I can expect you.

BTW, you'd need to be really racing through it to do a side in 1-2 hours. You'll spend that much time per side just cleaning stuff.

The birf is one job you do not want to rush. It takes time. You never know what you will find in there until you break it down. Replacing the birf and seals will address the clicking situation but does not come close to other items which should be addressed while in there. Numerous bearings, seals, brakes and rotors. Penny wise a dollar foolish. JMO.

Good Luck.

If I could rebuild the whole rig I would, given time I will.Bearings would be nice to do. Going through a move right now, and some other things. I am doing more then the minimal that I read which is repacking and switching birfields from left to right side........:)
I have always wanted this car, was about to give up when I saw her in the paper for 4000 obo .... It was upkept, the rotors replaced about 4 months ago, service done on it quite a bit I think.
I am happy to have it, and will continue to fix her up....

Thanks for the good luck

on route to MA before VT ... leaving early A.M.

Peace..
John
