I just bought a 2000 Champagne with 86k and have a few questions I hope you can help me with.

1. The infamous header leak, on the driver's side. I would like to attempt to pull this out and weld it in our lab at work. I read one guy said it was possible by prying the steering column out of the way. Any advice or comments before I attemp this?

2. Driving at 40+ MPH, there is a subtle but noticeable thrumming vibration and sound from the front of the truck. It follows the road speed, not the engine speed, so I'm guessing front drivetrain and/or tires. It thrums in waves, quiet to loud, at about two cycles every three seconds. It has new Dunlop Grandtrek AT20 tires with about 500 miles on them, stock 16" rims.

3. The automatic temperature control doesn't work all that well. If I set it to 70, it blows like mad after the truck warms up and then keeps blowing hot until I'm roasted. It eventually kicks down the fan speed, but will continue to blow hot. Stop for a minute, re-start, and it blows too cool from then on.

4. The AC isn't cold. Should be a simple re-charge (I hope)

5. PO had a Toyota repair record of a 'diff leak' at 62k with no indication of which diff was leaking. Never heard on here of these leaking. Has this been seen before, and if so, which diff is susceptible?

6. The lever to release the steering wheel adjustment just flops around. Anyone had this break? I'll tear it apart eventually, but if there is a common part in there that fails, I'll order it now.

I haven't had time to even crawl under it. We took it to Killington VT skiing about 12 hours after picking it up. I didn't notice the thrumming until about 100 miles in to the trip. Very annoying.

I saw someone had a change tray installed in the lower center console where there is presently just a blanking plate. Where can I get one?

Last, was there a 'tow package' that included improvements to cooling or was it just a hitch and wiring? I'll be adding a tow hitch soon, so any recommendations are appreciated: car trailer at around 3500 lbs. loaded.

Thanks! Looking forward to another 86k miles once all these get fixed.

Welcome to the forum!

Most of these all seem like minor stuff. Don't sweat it, it'll come out OK especially if you can do stuff yourself.
2 things to start: 1) learn to use the Search feature and the FAQ and 2) learn about CruiserDan for part acquisition...

You may have better luck and get better answers if you ask each question in a separate thread, btw, but I'm sure folks will chime in and help no matter what.

These Dunlops are not very good I would think. Any chance you can still return them or trade them in for something better?
On the A/C, check the little window to see if there is refrigerant left, or better get a gauge.
The auto temp on our 03 also blows very hard at first but then wiill maintain the temp OK.
Oh, and get yourself a FSM if you're gonna wrench on it, invaluable...

My '99 LX came already equipped to tow, except for the hitch and trailer lights sub-harness.

The main harness already had the trailer lights circuit, stubbed out to the rear area near the spare tire, with connector ready for the sub-harness. (Sub-harness available from various aftermarket towing parts suppliers.)

Otherwise, it came factory-equipped with the other main ingredients necessary for towing: Tranny and engine oil cooler systems, and Receiver Hitch mount points on the rear frame members. I think the cooling system per se is already "HD".

Can't imagine that 100 series LCs would not come equipped the same way, but maybe folks with LCs can confirm ?

From the FSM ('03 LX w/ tow package), the engine oil "cooler" isn't a radiator-type external device like the ATF cooler. It looks to be a cylindrical-shaped attachment about the diameter of the oil filter, maybe an inch thick, that screws to the block (some hoses go in/out) and the oil filter screws to it. Is that what you guys got on your pre '03 LC's?

Sounds a little worn for 86k. I've driven in New England and know that the roads can be rough, but a Land Cruiser should not show that much wear. Sounds like it has been beaten up pretty badly.

As for the droning sound it may either be a wheel bearing or front drive shaft/spline.

By golly, you're right, at least from what I see on my '99 LX.

It is not a "true" oil cooler such as one that routes oil to an external heat exchanger.

It is a coolant block that the oil filter mounts to, acting as a coolant-to-oil heat exchanger only at that point. (Coolant pumped from the thermostat housing.)

If the oil in the pan gets hotter than normal operating temp coolant, the coolant running through the filter block heat exchanger will cool the oil at that point.

But if the coolant first passes through the engine coolant jacket behind the thermostat, then pumped to this thing, it will also help by warming the oil, at cold start.

The '99 LX FSM calls it an oil cooler. (But FSMs do contain a few errors...I wonder...)

If you're concerned about max oil temp, use synthetic. :)
