Compared to our 470s, our 570 has a ton of valvetrain noise, more than any vehicle i can recall. Is this normal? Should I switch to 0w-30?

Normal and documented across the 3UR lineup of trucks. I switched to 5W30 and it alleviated some of the racket but the motors are still quite noisy when cold.

I agree that the 3UR engine is pretty noisy especially when cold.

As a point of reference to the OP, my 2004 Sequoia with the same engine as the 470 was very quiet compared to the 200s I've owned.

You may consider running 0W-20 oil per manufactures recommendation.

Do some research about fuel economy, EPA mandated, and what 3URs run everywhere else in the world. I will never run 0W20 again.

Remember- the 4.7 is belt driven, 5.7 has chain driven cams- so that will contribute to the noise difference.

I also run 5w30, but I'm in SoCal. I also don't feel super comfortable running 0w20.

I did a UOA on my 5w30 and I've never seen wear metals that low... Did not do one on 0w20 to compare, but I have no concerns with the 5w30.

There is alot of debate about oil viscosity on the internet and from various mechanics I've talked to. From my understanding the 0W-20 recommendation is for proper VVT cam phaser operation when cold (0w) in addition to better fuel economy from less resistance (mostly the 20).

I realize there is plenty of gamesmanship amongst car manufacturers related to fuel economy and EPA mandates but I find it hard to believe it is the only thing driving Toyota's recommendation. I'm sure they've beat the hell out of many 3URs in their lab dynos with 0w-20 to prove longevity.

Would love to see a UOA from a high mileage engine that has run 0W-20 from the get go.

I was thinking of moving from 0w-20 to 0w-30, not to 5w-30. I think the owners manual allows for use of 0w-30 across a broad temperature range.

Same cam phasers are used all over the world in varying climates with 5w-30 per Toyota’s recommendation.
Bobistheoilguy.com will have the UOAs you want to see. Even as an advocate of 5w-30 I stop short of saying 0w-20 isn’t great for our engines.. but the thicker stuff sure made my and other people’s valve trains quieter and for that reason and Toyota’s acceptance in the rest of the world I’ll keep running it confidently.

Oil of choice for me is 5w-30. For GCC spec 200s Mr.T recommends all the way up to a 20w-50. To my knowledge the internals are identical on all 3UR's. The difference in valvetrain noise is noticeable enough to negate the .5mpg I might gain from running 0w-20.

Bloc - I'll take a look at the UOAs on Bobistheoilguy.com but... more importantly, tell me that 80 series with a 6.2 vortec ran like a bat out of hell. Holy moly that had to be fun to drive!

It really was. And got better mileage to boot.

Tbh it probably wasn’t making the rated 400hp, between the stock 80 air cleaner and 3/4-ton mechanical fan setup. Our 381hp/6k# 200s are just a bit quicker when stock. But to have an 80 that has the muscle car feel and sound of a 200.. lots of fun.

Also it doesn’t sound as exciting but the 6L80 was nearly as great as the engine alone.

Edit: AND it used 5w-30! See? Keeping it on topic..

Nice! The 6L80 tranny is totally exciting, especially compared to its little brother the 4L60. I had a Chevy 1500HD 4x4 back in the day and the 6.0L and 6L80 combo was downright bullet proof.

I just performed my 2nd oil change on my 2018 with 0W20 at 17,500 miles. I now have a bit over 19,000 miles. What are your thoughts on Royal purple ?
I use M1 because it works, available everywhere, and is reasonably priced. I don’t need boutique over priced and over hyped oil in a low stress V8 that I change every 5k miles. I changed my oil at 2,500 and 7,500 on my 2020. Will keep up the 5k intervals.

I assume M1 is Mobile 1 ? and I was told I can go 10,000 miles before change but at 7000, i couldn't take it anymore and changed it

Agee on OCI. Oil weight may be up for debate, but I am dead set on nothing more than a 5k oil change interval.

Do you use the M1 5W30 extended performance or just plain M1 5w30 ?
