So in my 1994 FJ80 it has a valve or two that tick pretty bad. I’m not super concerned about it because they’ll tick for ever before something goes wrong. Just more of a peace at mind knowing it’s fixed. What valve spring brand should I go with for aftermarket. Or are aftermarket brands so bad that a ticking valve should just be left and just adjust the rocker arms.

There isn't any adjustment to the valve train the lifters have to be shimmed if it's noisy there may be more wrong than shimming like wore valve stem or camshaft.

So didn’t mean to post that without any response lol. I don’t think it’s a cam shaft because if it’s the camshaft normally there will be a grinding sound and won’t be a loud tick. I’m leaning towards valve stem or lifter.
Whats the most common issue with the valve train. If there is a post you can find or guide me to that would be awesome.
Thanks in advance

I don't have any recommendations do a search of the question your asking I'm sure it's been covered here before

I’ll take a video of the engine ticking since it’s loud. Hoping it will give an idea. I’ll probably find out what it is when I redo the valve cover

Many have found other causes for ticking sounds with their 1FZFE, like damaged power steering pump gears.

Valve adjustment is usually very stable on the 1FZFE but as mentioned, if they are loose and making noise adjustments happen with changing shims. Spring may or may not be causing the ticking and if it's running well otherwise I'd be less focused on the springs and more concerned with issues/wear on valve stems or cam as mentioned above.

So It’s not the power steering pump because I’ve gotten close and it’s at the front of the engine in the timing cover. The front of the engine is the last to get oil and is most prone to wearing out or ticking on most engines.
And I’m not concerned about it would just like to know what it is so I can figure it out. And the valve springs don’t tick. But I’m used to engines being able to being adjusted on the rocker arms and if you fix it and it’s to worn out you’ll end up snapping the valve springs while running and leading to a valve dropping into the engine.

So I’m just going to leave it alone as it seems to involve needing new lifters plus shims and that might fix it but isn’t for sure.

I’m going to address the power steering pump howling like a banshee first and also get my axles re done so I’m not leaking fluid

You need to improve your knowledge base before you do any work on your rig. At all.
You do not have rocker arms. The '94 FZJ80 has a twin overhead cam design.
The front of the engine actually is almost the first place to get oil.
Camshaft do not make grinding sounds.

There is tons and tons of info in the 1FZ on this forum, as well as FSMs available for download.

Mark...

Thanks for the info.
I’m slowly learning my stuff and still need to increase my knowledge with over head engines. I’ve only worked on OHV engines in the real world and torn down and put back together a 4.6 North Star which is a dual over cam with roller arms. I currently work at a dodge dealership and got some coworkers who would be more than willing to help me out.

I’ll never tackle an issue before I’m properly informed about what I’m working on. I’ll be doing more research on the FZ.
Thanks again

I'd remove the valve cover then have a close look at everything. This is an overhead camshaft engine so the camshafts ride on top of "valve shims" as shown by the arrow below. You might have a ticking sound from excessive clearances here. Go under the resource tab and download the appropriate page of the FSM (factory shop manual) and study it. I'd pick up a set of feeler gauge then check the clearances per FSM. It goes w/o saying, always check vids of this process on YT to get more familiar.

These pics are from my daughter's V6 engine but the same concept as our engines.

Does the FSM have all the factory specifications. I have access to mopar service library which should give me it and also snap on shop key pro which will for sure give me specifications.
I have access to micrometers, dial indicators, etc. I’ll be able to check valve out of round and check the clearance of everything.

of course, hence the name FSM . These are Toyotas, our valves don't go out of round, not that you can check them w/o removing the head :flipoff2:

@DodgeH8TER : here's one link, there are others done by OTRAMM (go to his channel in you tube) to get a better idea how the 1FZFE engine works.

Has the power steering pump ever been replaced?

Post up a video of the sound.
