Does anyone have a scan of the FSM for overhauling the vacuum shifter on earlier Fj40's transfercase? i am looking to find out if I need to "adjust" the fork depth with the nut that is hidden by the shift fork?

Basically the nut can change the depth of the fork, and I need to know if its just a tighten and go, or there is a specific depth I need to set it so the unit shifts the collar to a correct depth on the front output shaft.

When I disassembled it, it was not flush with the plunger, but in Coolermans pics, it is screwed all the way in.

It is part number 74 on this picture pirated from sor.com...

my FSM says nothing about the overhauling the vacuum assembly, it just has an exploded diagram of it. Manual #98154

If the fork were anything less than fully seated, it would end up floating on the shaft, AND moving the front wheel drive shift collar along with it. Neither of those scenarios sounds appropriate.

Unfortunate that the nature of the design leaves room for doubt.

I would screw it in all the way. It's the 'guy' thing to do.;)

Thanks Mark!

I think it would stay in place just the same, but be further from the actual shift shaft.

re-assembled it and it shifts fine, so we will see. Although not for a bit, cause I have other work to do on the 45LV... alot.

When I did mine I also had this question. On my web site at the top of every page are links to the 71 FSM for Engine and Chassis. Choose the Body Chassis link, then scroll down to page 076 and 077. That's all the FSM has about this. I put mine back the way I found it.
