Hey guys, this is my first post here; I am the proud new owner of an '85 FJ60. Been wanting one for a long time and finally found one around here. I've always heard about how simple and reliable this model is, but when I popped the hood I saw 17,473 vacuum hoses(give or take a few). This carbed engine has more vacuum hoses than my last 3 trucks put together! What the heck are all these things for? I mean, I know most are for emissions, but how much of it is necessary? Can I take most of it off?
Thanks

look up some of the desomg threads on here. lots of great info. you just have to make sure you can register the vehicle depending on where you live. I feel your pain with all the garbage on there!

Toyota does that just to confuse you,yes they are all necessary in one way or another whether its smog control, also controls fuel pump relays and fuel air mix, do not remove unless you know what you are pulling.

The emissions factory service manual should be a mandatory buy for any 60 owner. Lots of good info in there. If you need to pass a smog test, you'll lean on it heavily. Even if you don't, it will help you understand what can go and what needs to stay.

Welcome to Mud!

First, Welcome to Mud!

Second, What state do you live in? With all of the stuff connected properly, your rig will run great. If you start pulling things off, it may not pass the visual inspection if you have to get it smogged. (reason for asking what state you live in).

I think there is a total of 57' of vacuum line under the hood. At first glance it is kinda scary. Once you adjust the valves a few times, all those hoses are way less scary.

Congrats on the 60 (crew cab tractor)!

Crew cab tractor--I like that!
I live in Louisiana, never seen an emissions test, never even known anyone that's been tested(from here anyway). At some point I want most of that mess gone, but I think I better leave it for now till I become a little more familiar with the truck. My last 3 trucks have had GM TBI engines; seems like a 4.3 TBI unit ought be about right for the 2F--anyone ever done that? I liked the TBI, simple, reliable, and easy to work on.

That is exactly what I thought when I got my 81 Fj60, I called in my underhood spagetti. Then my smog system failed. Removing the emissions was on my list of things to do, but it kinda jumped up to priority #1 real fast. Look up "My Desmog Thread" that's the best thread I've found about it. And make sure you don't have to pass emissions tests where you live before you do it. It's something that also takes a while, I'm still not entirely finished with mine.

Thanks for the info; I sure was wanting to start ripping stuff off this afternoon but I held back. It just blows my mind that there's that much stuff on a carbed engine.
Everything I seem to find on converting to fuel injection is done by swapping the whole 3fe in; any reason you couldn't just do the injection? Aren't the engines pretty much the same?

They are both 6 cylinder engines that come in FJ 60 series Land Cruisers.

That is about where the similarities end but they share some common parts such as oil pans.

I see, I thought is was just an updated 2F. So much to learn!(always drove a chevy, and never anything carbed)
