Question for the VA folks. I just get a failed emissions result. The emissions readings themselves were fine. I only failed because the tech said he could not see a visible serial number stamped or labeled on the outside of my catalytic converter.

I have a single, aftermarket cat on my 80. This one: MagnaFlow Universal Spun Catalytic Converters 59956

It's been on there for years, and I've never had a problem. Anyone know anything about this requirement? Have I just been lucky the last few years and had tech let me slide? Is this new?

Never had to do emissions testing in Virginia. I would suggest moving :)

I spend some time on the DEQ page and no where on there could I find the cat conv regulations about serial number. I would have them point to their book.

But I couldn’t find the actual limits for gases on their site either.

It sounds like BS.

Looks like it needs some sort of EO tag or number...

Damn, that must be it. It’s a ‘95 so in a few more months I’m exempt from emissions,
I think. Guess it’s finally time to tear down that rear axle.

I’d still have them show you the code for VA.

How long does VA give you to reinspect? Maybe you can milk the system until 2020?

I think this answers the question: Passed Emissions Smog but tech can't find a # on the Cat so it's failed?

Maybe whoever installed the act oriented it so that the numbers are facing up at the floor pan and you need a mirror to read them, or they've "rusted" off? Though, it's SUPPOSED to be stainless steel, so...

Quote from the thread:

"Every approved aftermarket cat needs to have a visible executive order number. If it’s not visible or missing, you fail.
The exact manufacturer, as per the document is “Car Sound Exhaust Systems, Inc. (d.b.a. Magnaflow)”
There is a phone number at the bottom of the list 1-800-242-4450 . . . it is the air resources board public information helpline. I expect somebody on the other end of that phone will be able to answer your questions, and possibly get you in touch with a referee

BTW . . . here is an interesting cut and paste from D-193-103

New Label Requirements
The label on the catalytic converter shell must be ½ inch high and large enough to be read from a distance of 5 feet from either side of the vehicle. The label must show
the EO, specific part number (universal or direct-fit) for the vehicle, and date of production (month and year)
As I said earlier, if that label is missing or illegible, then the car should technically fail
I suggest you attempt to contact a BAR referee and provide him with all of the paperwork."

Numbers should look like this, perhaps?

Wow, thanks, Stump. I'll pull out some steel wool and a mirror and see what I can find on the cat.

If that doesn't work, I might try a RapidPass test - RAPIDPASS Virginia Since it just measures your actual emissions as you drive by, maybe that's a way around the cat code number issue?

Worst case scenario, I'll just keep it off the road for another 3.5 months and re-register it after the new year when it will be exempt. My schedule won't allow for any wheeling until at least then anyway. :(

So, no Fall Crawl?

So, no Fall Crawl?

Not this year, unfortunately. My wife and I have both been traveling quite a bit for work, so it's just too many weekends away.

Plus, ya know.... broken 80.
