Merry Christmas all! I'm looking at a used Warn 8274 (local classifieds) which is of unknown age and condition. Seller states that he bought the winch from PO that did not have it installed on a vehicle. Seller states he has "rebuilt" the winch using the two available Warn kits - "Drum/Brake" and the "Lower end" and does have four new solenoids. Winch does not have a remote, fairlead or cable. Seller also states that he doesn't know if the motor is good (wtf?)....Seller is asking $400....So what should I look for as a deal breaker and what is a fair price ?

Thanks !

if it's an 8274, even with a dead motor it's worth $400, but the breaker is all the other stuff... I bought a 12 volt 8274 (shot motor) with fairlead, cable, remote for $650 canadian, then bought a 24Volt motor for $200...

Hi All:

Good, running but used M8274 winches go for US$500. on average here in the PNW.

Trying applying power to the winch. Hook up the power cables to a charged 12 volt auto battery and see if it will power in and out cable.

If the winch motor seems to be dead, make a low-ball offer (say $250. or $300.) with the thought of having to buy a $250. replacement electric motor.

Good luck!

Alan

definitely put power to it first. but remember that all that other stuff will add up. fairlead, cable and remote could cost a couple hundred bucks easy. like josie said, they go for bout' $500 here and usually come with some or all of that stuff.

Too many unkowns there.....

As was mentioned by the time you buy the parts that are needed you will be near $700.

They sell out here regularly for 350-500 usually complete.

I paid about $750 for one a couple of years ago here on MUD. It was new and had never been mounted. It came with cable and a remote.

Thanks all ! I've decided to pass on this winch based on the input received here ! Happy New Years to all!

You may have seen my thread - I snagged two 8274's for $80. They were wrecks, but thats what I was looking for because I planned on going through them anyway. I could have made just one winch out of the two - there was enough good parts.

What you need is someone who doesn't have a use for the winch they have. Even if they know they are sought after, they may not realize just what they are worth new. Don't be afraid to buy one with issues. They are quite easy to fix - a burnt motor is expensive to replace but the new ones are more powerful. IMO a newly acquired winch should be opened up and run through just to baseline what you have before mounting and trying a recovery.

Keep looking - you've got time - it's winter :D

Selling WARN model 8274 Winch

Thanks all ! I've decided to pass on this winch based on the input received here ! Happy New Years to all!

If your stil lntrested in a Warn Winch I have one I'm willing to sell.. I really don't know how old it is . It belonged to my husband. He changed 4x4 and was in the process of making a new
bracket to fit the truck he bought.. In the meantime he passed away and it has been stored for 6 yrs. It worked perfect
when he took it off. Yes it has the controller and cable.
This is a 4 ton or 8000 #.
If anyone is intrested in this please reply and maybe we can get together on a price.
I'm located in South West Indiana

Paid 250 for mine and came with cable, controller (needs a new cord) and a brand new warn cover.
I am happy with the outcome as I am ripping it apart anyway.
The winch is in nice shape from the outside.
