Urgent, Oil 1/4" above full mark leaving for 8000 mile trip tomorrow

...but .... why?

Eh long story.

Well I gave it all I had. The dealer put some 10mm bolt and another 12mm bolt on there. Yes 2/4 are missing. Luckily I found those size tools; however, they are on there so tight I broke my POS chinese tools.

So I'll just leave it to American tire tomorrow. i'm going to make sure they dont stick anything in the filler tube, I'd rather them drain too much and have to add back some, as I have 2 quarts extra.

Thanks for all your help. I'm sufficiently embarrassed. This is coming from a kid who put together the K-Nex roller coaster in 1 night by looking at the picture.

FWIW M1 went from essentially clear to amber in 30 miles and looks the exact same after 7k miles.

One more dumb question...how tight should the filter be put on?

EDC Vegas up Cali and back home hitting most National Parks along the way. 4 weeks.
Coat the filter gasket with a light film of oil. Turn the filter 'til it makes contact with the adapter, then a half a turn or so more.

Sounds like a great trip.

Steve

Dude, leave it as is. nothing is going to happen. unless you have OCD, then do what you are going to do anyways. :-)

Yep, kinda sorta OCD. Like I said, I'm driving around the country and the last thing I want is something stupid to happen because someone filled the oil too high.

Peace of mind.

Honestly, if your that ocd about the level being a 1/4" too high you should have done it yourself. Also if your gonna do a 8000 mi. trip I would hope you could at least change your own oil or fix a flat? Get some proper tools and do it yourself.

Yes I can change a flat. I could have done it, I don't have the tools or the desire to cart around used oil for disposal.

Sorry I'm in the majority of 100 owners that pay a dealer for oil changes.

Yes 2/4 are missing.

put your man pants on
get under it
drain a quart
replace plug.

actually drain 80/100s of a quart or ~0.75L

The math in this thread is killing me. I'm a scientist and I work with engineers but I am not an engineer. Good luck. Have Fun. Drive Safe.

1/2 better? I figured 2/4 made it sound worse (for this scenario).

You pretty much hit the nail on the head. I just graduated with a BS in ME. I hated every second of it. I'm going to continue engineering for two years at which point I'm going to pursue an MBA which is going to be paid in full by the company that I start work for in August.

Right now, life is good and I don't have a worry in the world.

Tech: Drain plug torque is 29 ft-lbs.

I see. In that case just leave it as is.
Don't forget to post up pics of the trip!

If it really is a concern before your trip, and you dont have the means to do it yourself, take it to another Toyota/Lexus dealer and have them change the oil. Or, why not go right back to the dealer that overfilled the thing in the first place and ask the service manager to make it right.

If you do go to another dealer, don't bring them anything but your truck and the cash to pay them. There are plenty of 100s driving around that have never seen M1 oil. You'll be due for another oil change when you get back anyway.
Or, you could bring them 7.2 quarts of Wally World M1????

Your peace of mind is worth something and you should never be concerned with the reliability of your rig when you pull out of your driveway for an 8000 trip.

Enjoy and drive safe.

so on our 2uz engines, how much volume is 1/4" over the fill line?

my cruiser's oil level never moves between changes and we have prepaid service so I've never had to touch it -- but I do know that in some of my past vehicles that 1/4" on the dipstick is around 1/2 - 3/4 quart.

on the plus side - you at least got an oil change...I recall someone here saying they took their cruiser to the stealer and they charged him for an "oil change" that never happened.

It's had M1 since 50k, I'm not going back to Dino oil now.

I'm taking it to American Tire tomorrow at 7:30AM for them to drain a quart.

Why wouldn't you bring it back to Toyota and make them fix the issue? I would at least call and give them the opportunity to explain/make it right.

How many 100s does American Tire service everyday? Whose to say they have any clue at all? They might put all 10 qts in!

I already got today's service for free. They did some extra stuff and they credited me $97. I also don't feel like driving 1 hour to the dealer before a 4 week road trip.

We have had our 100 serviced at American Tire before without issue when needed in a pinch. Before that we had our old Acura serviced there that we personally sold to the owner. We've even had our S8 serviced there. Like I said, I'm not getting another oil change. They are draining around 1 quart of excess oil. If they drain too much, I have 2 extra quarts from today's fiasco.
