was changing the thermostat onmy 1hz (97) troopy (12v) and the socket shorted the alternator to the body?- i heard a hiss and smoke coming of the positive terminal -pulled the power lead off straight away and left for a while-
Have reconnected but everything dead - battery is ok (was grease on the terminal smoking) all fuses in kick panel seam ok -there must be a nother fuse somewhere?? (under bonnet??) but i cant find it..... car is stuck in my drive and i need it for work tomorrow!! -any ideas would be welcomed!! (it has a dual battery set up with the second battery removed but was never a prob before)
To clarify dead -no power whatsoever to radio or ignition but the battery still has plenty of power
cheers

check the fusible links on the positive side of the battery/batteries,12v 2 batteries??,they look like 12 or 14 gauge wires.
Simon

thanks Simon
yep found the fusible link -pulled it apart... sorry silly question but what am i looking for to be wrong here? just looks like two wires joined by a nut? - is it like a wire fuse??

Yes check its intact still and check teh circuits to it from the battery and after see if it is alive or dead - its a 80-90 amp fuse on the diesels.

Yes ,I think the insulation colour dictates what amps it should be. I got some from Odin Auto Parts in Balcatta ,but Auto One or Repcos should have it also.

thanks guys for replies -turns out the fusible link was ok but one of the wires from the fusible link to the battery had burnt through -i soldered on a new thick gauge wire and she fired up straight away!
lucky as i had a 300k trip to do monday - back in Perth tomorrow -should i be looking to replace or at least get a spare fuse? (link?)
cheers

Just buy 500mm of fuse wire and make your own as need be,but Ive only had to do it once on one landcruiser in 4 by doing something silly like shorting it out:rolleyes:
