Hello.
2006 LX470
As I have stated above I am, in need of relatively urgent assistance if I do not want my cargo floor carpet to catch on fire.
Recent work on Vehicle includes removing rear bumper and cross member for tow hitch.
This involved removing rusted bolts with a torch, pb blaster, and ultimately a grinding wheel.
Discovery Backstory:
After I removed the final pieces that support the rear bumper (I am sand blasting them and repainting on 5/26 then reinstalling after I scrape any rust off of rear frame and wool wax) I noticed when filling air at a gas station that all I could smell was an electrical fire. I thought maybe this is just lingering smell from torching rusty bolts on back of frame.
I drive for about an hour and then as I get off of the highway on the offramp I smell this again, and it smells fresh.
I made a stop at a grocery store and when i got back in the car, the difference between the fresh outside air and the pungent smell of burring rubber was so distinct I started taking everything out of my car.
When I did this I discovered a hot patch in the cargo area. right behind the Right Rear seat/above the RR tire my carpet is extremely hot.
I have been doing research and I understand this area is known to get hot. Mine is so hot that is is burning the insulation between the carpet and the body.
I can say this because this area does not match the elevation of the rest and is soft/thinner than the rest of the trunk.
This area is so hot that when I touched the metal hooks for cargo tie down I burned my finger.
Temp Solution:
Rear AC on and do not spike RPM for extended periods of time. This got me 3hr home.
Also, Ice packs... yes ice packs in wet swimsuit pockets seem to help this area not burn during my drive.
Question:
Does anyone know why this area could be so hot?
I see there is a small heat shield where the exhaust goes over the rear axle. this area comes extremely close to the body of the vehicle.
Am I missing any heat shielding in this area of the vehicle?
Could a bad cat/muffler create excessive heat?
Can my O/F ration being rich/lean create excessive exhaust heat?
Does the heat shield above the muffle extend fully over the muffler? Mine does not it falls short at the rear of the muffler.
This area is 120F after 5-10 minutes of the car being off.
This is the small heat shield I can see above exhaust. I measure exhaust at this point to be 180F after about 3-10 minutes with engine off.
I see this area above the rear of the muffler. I noticed maybe a bolt is missing here. I have not found a good reference photo yet.
Does anyone know what goes here?
I am getting 140F for temperature on my Flir camera here. I think it may be picking up the 300+ muffler though.
Any help/ideas are appreciated. I am sure no one has had this happen before as seems to be the reoccurring problem for me with my LX lol
