During my recent front axle service I discovered what I thought was a leaking power steering pumping marking the pavement was actually this little doohinkus in the upper oil pan.

That monster hex bolt/plug is part number 90341-27006 and gasket part number is 90430-27005 according to ToyoDiY. There is no mention of this plug or whatever it is in the FSM.

My questions is what the foo is this? Can I just pop it out, replace the gasket or is it holding/centering something behind it? Since I can't find any mention of it in the FSM it is some sort of plug with no other real purpose. I'm guessing the torque is around 10-15 ft/llbs like the other fasteners that go in the upper oil pan.

What say the more educated folks?

That is a bore hole plug, the passage that it plugs is feed to the oil pump, so suction. Metal plug, metal seal ring to metal pan, other that being loose, don't see anyway for it to start leaking? I would use the torque for the pressure relief on the oil cooler (27ft/lb) similar plug/metals.

Torque check it, if it's not loose, look elsewhere. That is the lowest spot in that area, most likely the oil is running down from another leaker, like the oil pump. As always, clean the area well and observe where the leak originates from.

i find this hard to believe that a perfectly good land cruiser would leak oil..............................
clean everything off real well, run it a couple of days then wipe your finger above the plug, you will probably have oil and its dribbling down from somewhere else.i just replied mine plug and gasket and still have a drip.yes it was coming from above.

My brain isn't working well tonight and probably shouldn't even post, but something tells me I have seen that same spot leaking posted on mud and everyone was posting that it was leaking from above as well and most suspected the dizzy o ring. Again take this with a large grain of salt.

Well false alarm sort of. A more careful look showed a leak at the oil filter. I guess looking for oil leaks without a light is not the most effective.

I tightened about 1/8 a turn. If the leak reappears today I'll change the oil and put a new filter on. I changed the oil about 5 months ago, so sorta due for my bi-annual oil change anyway. I didn't see if that hex was loose as I don't have one that big. My best guess is it is a 14mm.

For those interested, I saw a video from @OTRAMM showing a timing chain job. This doohinkus appears to just be a plug in the upper oil pan based on his video.

Thanks all!

HA!

For those who have been around for awhile, we all know how sketchy your advice is.

<for those in peanut gallery, Kevin has been helping me fix all sorts of moron mistakes for over a decade.>

I did believe you, but I just happened to see that video a little while yesterday.
