Looking at a 98, and I've read that the 4 pinion design is better on 2000+. Is it possible to swap this on a 98? I'm new to LC's, so I didn't know if just swapping out the guts would be enough? Or is it much more involved than that?

Or would this only make sense to do if the 2 pinion fails?

Any way to check the condition on the 2 pinion setup without opening it up? Wheel play or something?

Thanks. Sorry for being a noob!

You can find the 4 pinions easily as many have swapped in lockers. Carry or keep one if the 2 pinion fails. Straight swap.

Realize you're in the microcosm of Mud, so it seems like every 98/99 will blow the diff. There are thousands of trucks that have no problems. Also depends on your vehicle usage. If it's roads and dirt trails, I wouldn't worry about it. If you plan to get into situations like mud/rock that may be a little more "extreme" then I'd maybe consider it. Rather than go to 4 pinion I'd go locker.

Are there examples of people adding in a factory front locker to a rear locker only vehicle? How much work would this be? Spare part 100's are everywhere here.

Different axle for a factory front locker, not available in the US. You need a 105 series, which maybe you have.
So the 100's and 470's only had rear lockers outside of the 105's? Bummer.

We do have 105's here, but hardly any without heavy modifications/repair.
