Hi,

I'm changing my brake soon and wanted to replace OEM to aftermarket. Is there any brands to recommend?
Rotors (preferably cross drilled) & caliper and OEM pads.

Thanks.

I have been told not to use cross drilled rotors on a heavy truck. Works fine on light cars but not a heavy truck. I would be looking for slotted rotors only.

I am using SP slotted rotors in front and Hawk pads which I got here:

http://www.raceshopper.com/index.shtml

Fast shipping and knowledgable staff.

If you do a search, you will find several other threads regarding brakes.

When the rear pads wear out, I'll switch to the same set up in the rear.

x2. A few options out there and only go slotted, not drilled. I've heard good things about the Hawk pads also.

aftermarket roters

I have a set of Stillen slotted and drilled roters on my 2000 LC. Much better braking than original. Using ceramic pads from the tire rack - same manufacturer as the truck came with - just better modern material. So far very happy with the setup. No dust - no noise - and shorter stopping distances.

There is really no point in using slotted rotors on a truck, you simply won't have trouble with out gassing and pad glazing, what slotted rotors help with. You are best off using factory rotors.

For pads, the Hawk LTS pads offer excellent bite and fad resistance. That comes at a price, they tend to squeal. Given I have an 80 and the stock system is not the best, I am more than willing to live with this tradeoff for the increased performance.

I'm no expert for sure, but the set up I'm using seems to work better than stock. This was what was recommended to me and so far I'm pleased.

For all I know, the pads I'm using would have worked great with a new pair of OEM rotors too. For that matter, you can get the SP rotors without slots also.

For that matter, there are other quality parts available too.

It would be hard to stage a comparison test, which would lay some things to rest.

Honestly, the brakes on these things are pretty darn good to begin with.

Hi,
I'm changing my brakes soon and wanted to replace OEM to after market.

I found when I first bought my LC I was in a hurry to upgrade things for improvements. The problem is that the LC is a premium product made by one the best companies in the world. That means that there may not be much improvement available in the after market on a given part (very different from other vehicles I've owned). Those that claim to be superior in one metric often have corresponding drawbacks.

So my questions would be - What would you like to see improved about the braking performance on your LC? What kind of driving do you do ?

My my experience in driving various rental cars (domestic), toyotas and hondas that I or family members own/have owned, domestic brakes range from suck to decent, toyota brakes are from suck (03 camry) to pretty good (100), and honda brakes seem to be consistently good to very good. IMHO, the 100's rotors/pads are better than most OEM including the Lexus RX/ES). My limited experience w/ aftermarket is using powerslot rotors and porterfield R4s pads on my 4runner (front discs, rear drums), and it used to stop like a dog but now stops faster than the LX or honda sports car, which both have OEM brakes. OTOH, I have heard of aftermarket street pads that eat up rotors and don't stop worth beans. This said, I'll be a guinea pig this summer and swap out my OEM LX rotors/pads for powerslots and porterfields.

Let me know how this goes, because I need pads ASAP.

I installed ART (cryo'd slotted rotors) with Kevlar pads up front and Carbon pads in the rear over a year ago along with SS lines. Have about 18k on them now, with 5,000 miles pulling my Horizon trailer on and off-road. The difference over OEM is pronounced. Due to all the extra weight of my rig the stock rotors and pads just weren't enough. I have no complaints on my current brake set-up.

I think Spressomon has the same pads I'm running on my 4runner, the porterfields. They aren't cheap ($120/front axle), but are definitely worth it. I won't get to my brake upgrade until late this month or early next month (will be out of town on vacation). I think the ART rotors will work the same as the powerslots, price is about the same, if not a tad cheaper. I'll likely stick w/ the powerslots since this is what I'm using now.

When I was doing the brakes on my 80, I was told by a distributor of Porterfield pads not to use them on the 80 because they would not last long. He steered me toward the Hawk LTS pads which he didn't sell. The Hawks work great, but they do squeal.

I think it depends how hard on the brakes on is. I have 75K on my porterfields right now, mixed driving, but the vehicle weighs a lot less than a 100 and it's a manual transmission (I don't downshift to brake, just let it coast to slow down). Spressomon is the guinea pig right now.

Any squealing with the Porterfields?

The only time I get a little squeek from my Pfields is when I have wheeled in the Nevada talc all day I will get some light squeek when crawling down a steep slope because the dust is so fine and heavy on the rotors/pads. But NEVER any other time on or off-road.

Well the lack of squeal is a big plus over the Hawk pads.
