Here's my scenario:

My wife wants a new 2022 Sienna ( we are expecting our 4th kid in July.) She wants me to take her 2014 Sequoia (limited trim pkg w/ 98k we are the 2nd owners of this vehicle) and sell my 2005 LC w/ 174k (I'm the 2nd owner of this vehicle as well). I would rather upgrade to 200 series LC or possible LX 570. I typically don't go off the beaten path (except for hunting season) and mainly drive a WHOPPING 6 mile commute to work. Her vehicle is usually the daily grinder with the kids, but my vehicle comes into play every now and again.

So, should I :

A) Listen to my wife.

B) Upgrade to a 200 series LC or LX 570

(what would be the top 5 pros and cons between the 200 series LC and LX?)

C) Just keep my old 100 series.

Thanks in advance!

If your wife wants a van does she want captains chairs for little ones? We don’t own a van but there are times when we travel when it would have been easier with little ones. That being said we love the LX to travel. We put around 25k miles a year traveling.

I’d do an extensive test drive with your wife. Seems like your on different pages.

Keep the 100 series or sell it to me….

Keep your 100 and get the minivan. We had minivans when my three kids were growing up and they can't be beat for hauling around the clan. They are very safe also.

It is hard to beat the minivan when it comes to practicality and daily use with multiple children - we had 2 mini vans and 100 series for a long time and for off roading trips and vacations it was tits, but for daily grinds minivan all the way (2 children by the way and I can't even imagine 4)

If you have the $$$ LC or lx570 are very nice for sure, but what ultimately took our 100 series away from us was rust issues... if not I would still be driving it.
Don't get me wrong I love the current ride (LX570), but the upgrade over 100 series was mostly condition (Texas truck) and tech related (kind of old by now anyway) and yes the engine is super sweet, but I would't take this step for just increase of hp alone.

I guess ultimately the use of vehicles in the household will dictate some decision making...

The 2014 Sequoia is very nice and if not used for high level of difficulty off road adventures will be sufficient for most overlanding trips and provide a much better comfort level for the family of 6.

Enjoy whatever you do in good health!!

With 4 kids and all the detritus they require, a 200 (either LC or LX) would be too tight for daily duties. My sons family with 3 kids borrows my LC once in a while for trips to the cabin and always runs out of room. I strongly recommend the new Sienna for daily duties and keeping the 100. I see you’re in VA, so as long as the LC isn’t too rusty, it will run for a long time yet. So my bottom line is a combination compromise of A and C.

Trade the sequoia and 100 in on a lx570 would be my advice.

Lx570 has a more supple/comfortable suspension than the land cruiser…with easier entry and exit (because it lowers)…and a lift when you’re Offroad. Also lx570’s are cheaper than 200 series land cruisers.

Put a big bull bar and winch on the front and you can fix the more ridiculous looking front ends of the newer lx’s.

As far as fitting kids and gear: about $1,000 worth of roof cargo box and hitch carrier fixes any space issues you might have in the 200 with kids (and the gear needed for daily duties, trips, etc).

I almost pulled the trigger on this when couldn't find my LC and was impatient. Not a bad looking vehicle. check out the other vehicles on this guys lot. Money money!

I should say i know nothing about this dealer, but was very close to buying the sequoia.

In your scenario, I'd get the minivan, sell the sequoia (it's really just a minivan anyway) and keep the 100. Why does she want you to get rid of your vehicle? Seems like a minivan and a 100 with 3rd row seating would be an acceptable quiver for a family of 6.

If you just feel like something newer, a 200 would be fine. But if you're attached to your 100, I would keep it. LX is arguably the more versatile family SUV compared to the LC. Adjustable suspension and a few more creature comforts. LX is also cheaper usually by about $5-10k all things being equal. LC dash is attractive, LX dash is hideous. Touchscreen on the older LX's is just plain not good, makes the car feel very dated. I drove both and actually liked the LC more, but ended up with a Lexus because I'm cheap that way.

Oh, and get a vasectomy before you run out of options!

If I read this right the wife will get her MiniVan.
You have decision about Keeping Sequoia, Keeping LC, get rid of both and get new LC/LX.
The used car market is probably about as good as it can get. You will likely get top dollar for your used. Question is how much will you have to spend on you newer LC/LX.

So if it was me. I would begrudgingly purchase the MiniVan of wifes choice. I would sell the Sequoia and keep the 100 series (always wanted a 100 series). Oh and take Heckraiser advice on that vasectomy.

Good Luck

I was against having a van. We’ve had a decent stable of nice SUV’s. Range Rovers a Land Rover and now a 200. I have to admit that when we fly out of town and rent a van for us to use. My wife and I talk about how much easier it is to do things with the van. I’d say a van and a 100 is a great combo.

Yes, she wants the 7 passenger version w/ the captain chairs.
Have you found a new Sienna minivan? Around here they are impossible to find.
Yes, we have found both an XLE and XSE in stock at my local Toyota Dealer.

I think the OP is well informed to make this decision.

He's definitely getting a minivan in his family to support a large family of 4 so that's not the debate. The question is whether for him to switch from the 100-series. To a Sequoia and whether that satisfy him (he has both in his possession to help make that call). Or should he be making the switch to a 200-series (this is the question).

As a previous 100-series owner, the 200-series functions very much like a 100-series in all intents and purposes. Space, utility, all of that. Significant difference is obviously it's more modern and has more power (same drivetrain as Sequoia).

There was a question as to LC to LX differences. The top 5 may be different to everyone but here's a potential list of differences. (copied from here)

1) More sound deadening (acoustic glass, engine covers, additional door seal, more extensive interior insulation)
2) Powered rear hatch for open/close, also key fob operated (later LCs got this)
3) Soft open rear lower tailgate, with power latching
4) Surround camera system
5) Ventilated/Heated front row (later LCs got this)
6) Mark Levinson Reference (only other model to get the Reference system is the LS) w/surround (19 speakers vs 14, 10" sub vs 8")
7) Power side view mirrors with auto-fold (later LCs got this)
8) AHC - AVS, lift on demand, adjustable and continuous damping logic, anti-dive/roll/squat, leveling, etc.
9) AHC underbody armor
10) Shorter roof rack (LC has a longer roof rack with 3 supports per side)
11) Steering headlights (AFS) in early LXs, LED array in later LXs
12) Projector headlights ('16+ LCs got this)
13) Headlight washers
14) Storage in rear seat armrest
15) Power slide rear seats
16) Second row storage on front seatbacks is a panel vs net
17) 14-way adjustable driver seat vs 10-way LC (passenger 12-way vs 8-way)
18) Adjustable tilt front headrests
19) Power stowage for 3rd row seat
20) All windows down by holding remote door open button for 3+ seconds (not sure Toyota's have this?)
21) Substantial Lexus key fob
22) Fade-To-Off interior lighting (I believe LC got this in 2014?)
23) Puddle and side step lights
24) Door sill lighting
25) Interior ambient lighting
26) Additional trunk side light and open tailgate lighting
27) +2hp / +2tq (requires 91 octane, LC is 87 octane)
28) Semi-aniline leather and more luxurious interior appointments
29) Ventilated second row outboard seats
30) Four-zone climate concierge
31) LED Headlamp with AHS Sequential Turn
32) LED Cornering Lamp
33) 12.3-inch high-res split-screen display (LC 9")
34) Head-up display
35) Steering wheel paddle shifter
36) Door puddle projector lamps
37) Rear door retractable sun shades
38) 2020 gets special trims: "LX570 Sport" to "LC Heritage"
39) Dual screen rear entertainment
40) All-Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (LC DRCC for 25mph and up)
41) Auto air quality air recirculation

I am not a fan of mini-vans but they very practical for big families. If you’re doing most of the carpooling, go for the mini-van. However my dislike for them would lead me towards the long wheel base Escalade or the more budget friendly version GMC. I rented the new Navigator for a couple weeks and the family loved it. But my kids are all driving now and we don’t need anything that big.

You can shuttle 4+ kids and cargo in a Sequoia.

You can shuttle 4+ kids or cargo in an LC/LX.

If the family will rarely use the LC/LX then 100 or 200 series is really dependent on how reliable your 100 is, how much $ you have to burn, whether you really just want a 200, whether you plan to offroad or not, etc. In that case it's your vehicle so do whatever floats your boat.

If you're going to fit 4 kids in the LC/LX regularly, particularly with cargo (i.e. suitcases, groceries, etc) you'll quickly find trunk space sucks once you start folding down the 3rd row and the extra space in a Sequoia will be nice.

The only other LC/LX <->Sequoia thoughts I'll pose are that the Sequoia is cheaper than the LC/LX but similarly reliable, and the Sequoia is quite a bit longer so if you deal with city driving, small parking lots, parallel parking, and the like the shorter LC/LX length can be a pro.

(personal side note: I'm normally not a huge fan of the Sequoia exterior for some reason but I saw a blacked out lifted Sequoia while in Montana this summer and I really liked it. That said I cross-shopped the LC and Sequoia and I found the latter was so big inside it just felt too much).

If you have the money... get her what she wants. Get yourself what you want.

If I ll have to do it, I'll get her the van, me an LX and sell sequoia. I'll keep the 100 and built it, have some fun with it.

Gotta agree. Had an '04 Sienna XLT Limited AWD. loved it. No, it's not a LC/LX, but for the bulk of day to day stuff, you're going to be happy.
