I'm a long-time lurker on the site, and owned an FJ60 a long while back. I'm thankful that this site is such a great resource.

I purchased a 2008 LX570 a few months back, which had a few miles (109K) but was clean and a full service history at regular intervals. I read through the majority of threads in this forum prior to purchase, and felt well-enough informed about possible issues prior to purchase. This past week, I dropped the vehicle off at the local Lexus dealer (Northern CO) to have the radiator replaced preemptively and the transmission fluid changed. The radiator had a small line forming under the data plate, but was not visibly leaking. The trans fluid was original, so I decided it was time for a change at 110K.

The vehicle is my wife's daily driver, and after received the vehicle back, it began slipping at 3-4K RPM under acceleration. Prior to the dealer service over 1000s of miles, the trans had exhibited no issues at all; shifts were smooth, and there was no slipping of any kind. We took the vehicle back to the dealer to get it checked out. The dealer found "evidence" of antifreeze in the trans, and recommended a complete replacement. I can't prove the dealer did anything wrong during the service, no more than I could prove that a previous owner fouled something on the vehicle. The trans service was a drain and refill, not a flush.

I have a bit of experience with the 200 series, after driving armored versions for work overseas. We never experienced any trans issues, despite operating under "extreme" conditions. I've only found one other example of this issue occurring in MUD threads.

My question for the collective knowledge of the forum is, have any of you experienced this issue, or heard of such a thing? I have a hard time believing that such a catastrophic failure from corroding lines could happen so fast, with no slipping beforehand. I don't want to replace the trans, but feel I don't have much choice.

Thanks for your time.

My first thought to it slipping was that they just underfilled the tranny and didn't follow procedure to set the right fluid level.

I've heard of mixed antifreeze in the tranny with other brands, but never a 200-series yet? They would have noted such a thing when they serviced the vehicle the first time. For it to happen after? Weird.

That was my first thought as well; and the situation just seems "off." This is a reputable dealer that I've had positive experiences with in the past, hence the choice to go there. How many 200-series examples are there here with transmission issues? Maybe 10?

After further research, the issues resulting from the dealer trans drain mimic exactly those described in this thread:

...right down to the weather conditions. I think a second opinion is necessary at this point.

Get under there and change it yourself there are plenty
of threads here on how to properly change your tranny
fluid...worse comes to worse you would only be out
funds for ATF and a filter you have nothing to loose its already slipping.

Here you go...

Update: I took the vehicle to an independent specialist, who checked the fluid level on the transmission: about 2 quarts low.

The independent shop drained and refilled to the proper level, and now the vehicle drives great with no issues. I should have gone to the independent shop in the first place, and won't make the same mistake. The loaner vehicle provided by the dealership is convenient.

I could understand some variation on fluid levels during filling, but with the information and equipment available to the average tech, these kinds of mistakes are unacceptable. Between this and some other situations (recirc door?), I'd say that many dealerships aren't qualified to service the vehicles they sell.

Either way, the issue is solved, and hopefully this will help others in the future.
