Upcoming Tech Days! I need your help. (2 Viewers)

My 2 cents, but this particular Tech Day should start early, as it does take some time to rebuild two knuckles (if you plan to do both in one day). Okay, I'll shut up now.

I bought my knuckle rebuild kit from Marlin but Cruiser Outfitters, Trail Gear, AllPro, MAF, SOR all sell kits. Your kit will probably come with the shims for the steering arms but you don't need them as you are not swapping arms.

*If you have a drum axle I would buy from Cruiser Outfitters, MAF, or SOR since they will likely be the only ones with drum parts.*

Sebastien, I think you or one of those who are rebuilding their axles should host the tech day at their place.

Dave, you are correct that this tech day should start early and most all the vendors carry Koyo or other high quality bearings the same as Toyota sells.

I was told my knuckles needed a rebuild when I bought the truck.... So I would be down with a knuckle rebuild tech day too... I would also say we should try to do the tune up day as well. If you're at teh meeting tonight John, we can set dates for these tech days. Maybe for the tune up day we could combine it with a bbq?

How do you know if the bearings needs to be replaced? (besides finding out the hard way like i did...)

Bring lots of rags, brake cleaner, more rags, latex gloves, more rags, more brake cleaner, and more rags. Don't forget to bring lots of rags.

It looks like IPOR sells the knuckle kits, too, along with the wheel bearings. Anyone know if they're using the Koyo or equivalent bearings?

I guess I could just call them..... I'm lazy.

I don't know for sure, but you don't want to have to go back in there again. Just do it all once and be done with it. (if that's what you're alluding to :))

talked to cam. Ipor kits have the koyo bearings.

I did not realize you guys carried stuff like axle rebuild kits. Good to know we have a local source.

OK, I have decided NOT to do a tech day for my Saginaw power steering swap. After spending the weekend removing the current minitruck system I have realized this is going to take a lot longer than an afternoon tech day. It took me most of yesterday to cut two 3.25" holes in the front frame crossmember. Trust me, that would not have been much fun to watch. I have been taking pictures and will post up a thread in the 40 tech section and put a link here.

So let's do the axle rebuild bonanza for the next official tech day.

Do we have an official count of people who want to rebuild and a host driveway? Even with air tools we will have to limit the number of trucks we are going to tackle in one day. If you have not bought your rebuild kits give Lance or Cam a call and get your kit on the way.

John,

I have a huge holesaw that I use to cut those holes. Works like a charm.

Did you get the weld in sleeve from Cruiser outfitters? I think it's a good idea and it's only like $10.00

I have an adapter for a chevy or I did it column in you want to go that route. I like that more because there are no welded joints, all splined, more like a factory setup. If you go stock column, you should check out the doube d joints, they at least will still hold together if the weld breaks.

Sorry for the unsolicited oppinion, but I've been there and done that...;)

After you completely clean the bearings and dry them with a *little* help from an air gun, the bearings should look bright, smooth, and spin easily (with your finger, not the air). If there is any blueing or discoloration, then they have been exposed to excess heat, possible galling, and need to be tossed. If there is any galling, it will be on the roller bearings themselves. Also look for even wear on the roller bearings, as uneven wear is bad.

If the bearings look and feel ok, then take a look at the races. If all looks ok, you can reuse them. I've reused bearings in the past, but usually replace them, since I'm in there, especially if I have no idea how long the bearings in question have been in there.

Oh, don't forget many, many rolls of paper shop towels and latex gloves. I also like to use a scooped rubber spatula to clean out the gist of the goop from the knuckles. Good luck.

I am the proud owner of a 3.25" hole saw now also. I am using the Cruiser Outfitters sleeve and thought I would have a hard time finding a hold saw in a weird fraction but Home Depot had one on the shelf. While it took awhile it was not as bad as I thought it would be. Once you get over the fact you are drilling a huge hole in your frame it is easy. The drill only got away from me twice when it bound and smashed my hand against the frame. :eek:uch:

Also using the bushing from Cruiser Outfitters instead of the pillow block. Seems like a much nicer solution, installed it on the column last night. I have all Borgeson joints and a double D collapsing shaft. Tonight I work on a frame for the power steering cooler to mount in front of the radiator. Since the truck had AC and I removed the condensor I have a ton of room in front of the rad now.

No interest anymore? As I said, I'm willing to help out with menial dirty work so folks can concentrate on their rebuilds.

I'm in. I just need to get the parts. While I'd be happy to host, my place is not ideal. Only space for one, maybe two trucks, no air, etc.

Why call him? Let's just show up at his parents' house with half a dozen trucks and 10 gallons of grease. They'd love it.

:D
