Unusual Find (Maybe) in Diff Oil - Help with ID

I've seen it happen .... but I will say that it appeared that the drain plugs had been turned prior to my touching them as they had marks from an ill fitting socket on them.

I am not above saying that the dealer could have lied ... I have personally caught a stealership charging me for work they did not do and parts they did not use in the past.

It appears that I may be able to get a definitive answer - though it may take some time. Somebody has offered the services of a SEM to verify if the material is the same as the housing. Will follow-up here once I have those results.

Those look like the little left-overs which happen when you drill a hole with a dull bit. The metal heats and stretches in front of the drill until it breaks through.
Do you have an angry ex?
Maybe someone threw them in there trying to drum up some work for later?
Could just be leftovers that finally worked their way down the axle tube. Still really hard to believe there were there in the first place... since you don't have any damage, Neat find!

A suggestion.

Can of oil open on floor beside workbench, and a man drilling (whatever?) beside can.
Some bits fall into the oil and thus get poured into the diff by accident.
Something that size would settle to the bottom very quickly and not move again.

Just an idea, seeing as we are pretty sure the diffs have been drained.
