It looks like it distributes the force of the hood pads and prevents denting.

It may however I have never had an issue with that on any of my other 40’s.

That is a good point. Yes they were installed unpainted. My 83 looks like an after thought. I assumed it was Aftermarket when I first saw it.

I too have had J4's with these on and also assumed they were aftermarket. Guess they make sense in the rust belts where the paint rubbing off is not a good thing.

yes they are stainless.
