Where? The hood on my US market 1980 has those. I want new ones
eBay, Instagram, maybe Facebook marketplace. A lot of this NOS is coming out of the Gulf (Middle East). Folks in the Gulf have warehouses and warehouses of old Land Cruiser parts. Fill one warehouse, build another... Space isn't a premium in parts of the world, nor is money.

I had mine rechromed by a friend and did the Honda strut inside and love it.
I think my originals the spring is probably dust now and they are only working by friction so it's a game of how much friction I need to add so the hatch holds open but it's not too hard to open it...
I thought about opening them and see if I could replaced the springs but as they were in usage I preferred not messing with them but now I will probably have a look inside once I swap them.

For the re-chrome, personally I really like the patina that developed on my originals, if I can save them I won't mess with that for sure!

(Except the paint overlap obviously)

Once you open them up you can put gas struts in them. It's just a recoil spring and bushing in them originally.

what is that tan bag on your spare?

what is that tan bag on your spare?
I hope I'm not speaking out of turn... It's a spare tire 'trash' bag, part of the phenomenon of ever growing 'off-road' paraphernalia that
we never realized we needed to function properly in the 4x4 zone...

Very diplomatically put.😉

Considering that we need to haul our own human waste out of trails instead of digging cat holes and having trails shut down. You have the choice of carrying crap inside your rig or on the outside. The trasheroo is convenient for that.

That doesn't look like a trash bag on the spare tire to me. There's too many straps and D rings. Not sure what it is or what its purpose is, but I'd like to know from the horses mouth.

Fwiw, Cruiser owners have had bags and storage in/on the spare tire for decades before Trasharoo hit the market. I recall seeing them on 40's in the late 90's and they were old then. I'm all for storing stuff anywhere one can if it means getting out and using one's Cruiser.

True; my comment is referring to the trend 'nowadays' to strap and bolt on every conceivable gadget and contraption to one's
'urban survivor' vehicle, not @flx's rig specifically or anyone in particular - especially on this website!
(Mine has a swing-out with 2 Pax gas cans...)

Years ago when my buddy @dusty66 was active on the FJ cruiser forums, someone posted a pic of their rig, which closely resembled your description, and asked for comments.

Dusty’s reply: it looks like you drove through Pep Boys with a crap magnet on!

I’m all for carrying the gear and tools you need for a wheeling trip. It can be a challenge to do in a 40, especially if you’re taking a passenger. That’s the main reason I removed the jump seats from mine.

But who hasn’t had a good laugh at other people’s rigs (mostly heeps, dare I say it) loaded for bear, driving in town with every sand board, axe, shovel, Jerry can, jack, and RTT known to man hanging off if it.

I agree. Here is what strictly trash one looks like. Pockets with strap probably more utility pack for the back.

It is a kind a of Trasheroo, except it's one that looks a bit "classic", like an old school backpack.

All the D-rings are for carrying a roll, which I use to carry my ground tarp I use under my tent... As it's always either dusty or muddy I'm happy to not carry it inside and let it dust-out outside while driving.

(and if you are wondering, the Maxtrax where they are in this photo was a very bad idea for the square wheel carrier.)

Main pocket is quite smaller than a true Trasheroo but I still use it for my trash + keeping my kinetic strap easily accessible.
I may hang a few things like my shower floor or a rag when wet or dirty.

It is the only non original thing strapped (or bolted) to my FJ40, so I hope to not look too much like an overland special mall crawler ;p
I only have it on when doing multi-weeks trip, otherwise I let people enjoy my shiny hub cap
Among all the non original things you can install on your vehicle it's probably the less intrusive one and easier to remove.

I’m looking for what appears to be one of the most unobtainable parts: A functional headlamp switch for a 1973 FJ40 (manufacture date 01/1973). I think this switch (84112-20030) existed only in Cruisers built between 09/1972 and 08/1973.

Both @Racer65 and ToyotaMatt (vintageteq) have one for 69-72 years, Cruiser Cult has one for 59-68 years, and it looks like 74+ can still be easily obtained. I called Cruiser Outfitters, SOR, RedLine, etc and nobody has a 73 one or knows where to find it.

Any suggestions for where I can find this 73 switch or who to contact about possibly rebuilding/repairing the original shorted out and now damaged switch?

Good chance you can rebuild the switch yourself. If it has tabs holding it together, pry them open just enough to get it apart - most are fragile and will brake off easily. If that happens wrap with unwaxed dental floss and apply glue. There can be spring inside that push on contacts - Open the switch in a box with hand ports in the side and cellophane on top - helps prevent looking for flying parts. Epoxy can rebuild burnt/arked areas.

Convert the wiring to work with a switch you can get.
