I have been on the fence the past few months about keeping or selling this engine, and I have decided to re-home it.

Up for grabs is a true, unmolested 1HD-FT out of a 1995 HDJ81. No EGR, no electronics, no problem.
For those who love H-series engines, this one is the holy grail. Originally, I was going to put this engine into a triple-locked manual HDJ80 project I have been working on throughout the summer (see this thread: 1HDT to 1HDFT swap - 80 series - https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/1hdt-to-1hdft-swap-80-series.1363820/#post-15988329 ). However, I have since changed directions, and plan to keep things original.

About this engine:
  • 337,000 km = ~209,500 miles
  • Non-EGR 1HD-FT variant
  • Mechanical pump, untouched from factory
  • Appears to have aftermarket turbo (installed prior to import?)
  • Aftermarket alternator
  • Timing belt done at 289,000 km = ~179,500 miles
  • Remarkably good oil analysis from Blackstone Labs
  • Running great and getting about 23 mpg on the highway
  • No blow-by
  • Mated to auto A442F trans
  • Seems to have been well-cared for on the other side of the pond

  • Good oil pressure & compression
  • Absolutely no known issues

Asking $12.5k
I couldn't find much history of FTs selling here on Mud, as they really don't come up for sale too often. This seems like a fair price. I would ideally like to find a local buyer, or at least someone to come out and do the transaction in person. That being said, if I have to crate the engine and ship it, I am willing to do it, as long as the buyer makes the necessary arrangements. There's been a lot of clever scams going around lately, and doing business over the phone makes me nervous.
  • Right now, the engine is still in the truck, and running. I will probably pull it this weekend or next. If you want videos of something specific, drop me a message.
  • I am open to including other swap-related parts with the sale - engine harness, throttle cables, etc., most things are up for grabs.

Best engine Toyota ever built. I have one in our 80 and one in the troopy. Would be the perfect swap. I recommend posting a video with the oil fill cover unscrewed and just sitting on the treads while the engine is running.

Good luck mate!!

Compression Test Results:
  • Cylinder #1 - 480 psi
  • Cylinder #2 - 470 psi
  • Cylinder #3 - 470 psi
  • Cylinder #4 - 500 psi
  • Cylinder #5 - 490 psi
  • Cylinder #6 - 490 psi
I let the engine cool down too much on the first couple, which is what I think the variation is between the first cylinders I tested compared to the last. Altitude factor of 0.86 used to account for roughly 5000ft elevation. First time doing an FT, it proved to be a lot more trouble than the 1HD-T compression tests. Confirmed what I already knew, that it ran great, but peace of mind for the buyer.

The injectors appeared to be in really nice shape, I have a feeling the P/O replaced these at some point. They were all OEM nippondenso, and the tips looked too good to be 30 years old. They also came out really easy, which is not normal for the original set.

While I was in there, I also threw my boroscope down the cylinders. Looked great, factory crosshatching on all the cylinder walls, no scoring or abnormalities. Difficult to get a good picture, but here's one of Cylinder #1:

Oil Pressure Results:
  • Warm Idle: 12 psi
  • Warm @3000rpm: 79 psi
Performed using a hose/adapter to my gauge, connected into the oil pressure sensor location underneath the turbo on the block. Very healthy results.

A couple pictures underneath the valve cover.

A couple bits of FIPG stuck on there from the install, otherwise superb.
