I'm getting close to painting the cruiser and was going to order a undercoating gun. The gun I'm looking at doesn't come with a container, you have to buy them seperatly, but it seems like I read in here (I did a search but couldn't find it) that you can use some generic off the shelf container, is that true? What can I use?
A buddy of mine painted his rig with a Wal-Mart undercoating then sprayed a color final coat on the next day and loves the results. This is what I'm thinking of doing. Any comments would be most appreciated.
Thanks,

schutz gun

I just did the Durabak inside mine and used a schutz gun a guy gave me. Had a heck of a time finding a suitable container. I read somewhere on here that a guy used a Gatorade bottle and that's what I ended up using at the last minute because the "suitable container" I had rounded up disintegrated when I washed it out with Xylene. I did see on the Eastwood website or somewhere where they had a steel container specifically for the schutz gun. The threads on the gatorade container were not compatible, it was a jam fit but it worked. I used the new "sand" color rough durabak. Looks good but a bit pinker than I expected.

No offence to those that love this stuff. But imho undercoating/bedliner is the last thing I would put on a 40. Its just going to trap moisture eventually and rust it worse than if it was just painted. And be a real pita to deal with when that time comes.

I started with a bed that was not resto material and decided to go with what I have. I cleaned out the rust, went through the entire POR ordeal and the top coated with the Durabak. I am guessing that my grandson will have to deal with it but by then gas rigs will only be allowed in museums and parades. I really debated the bedliner thing and wouldn't consider it for a parade rig or don't touch the paint it's too darn pretty rig.

Just my $.02. To prep. metal to accept anything requires a primer and then some kind of sealer for moisture. Typically a primer/sealer is used, this gives good bite to the metal and creates a moisture barrier. The barrier is temporary, it wants some kind of coating to do a permanent seal. Bedliner is a urethane like paint so I would describe bedliner/paint the same way. It is the permanent sealer. I think many folks get caught up in the top coat when the primer/sealer is the main protection from rust. If the primer holds to the metal then the top coat keeps the moisture out. Rust comes when the primer gives up or a seam cracks and degrades the topcoating.

Thanks to all those that have made a reply.
To give you a better feel for what I'm trying to do. The cruiser was very light when I got it (very bad rust) I have welded parts back on to keep from falling through the floor while driving and the plan for this cruiser is to take to the hills with the family, nothing too extreme but it won't be in a car show either. I want a bullet proof, rust proof, tough, ride that I can get dirty.
If I put a top coat on the liner, would there be any issues with it sticking? Does anyone think I should POR-15 before putting on the liner?
Thanks again,

I used POR-15 and while it was still tacky sprayed it with the 3M undercoating you buy at Advanced autoparts. After a year and a half I've had no problems at all. It took about 6 cans of the 3M at $4.50 a can on sale to do the complete underside.

The POR was a pain but I think I'll be glad I did if the liner sticks to it. My POR cured for a couple of weeks while I decided what to do next and order my durabak. I roughed up the POR surface AND used their self etching primer, what's a mother to do? It will just be a hunting/driving rig and I am not very abusive by nature so I think me and the grandkids will enjoy it for a long time to come. (cue the Andy Griffith whistling fishing song)...............

I am getting ready to do the same, POR 15, then use the Raptor liner. I called customer service, and they said to just sand the por 15 with 80 grit by hand to give the Raptor something to grab onto, then spray it. POR 15 will take care of water and rust, and the liner will be the finish look.

For the purist this is not. However, for those who want a long term solution (and to hide some past problems) this seems to be a good solution.

FWIW.

Armacoat in tub and underneath

I paid to have my fj40 sprayed with armacoat and another $400 for matching paint(cost of paint only). Armacoat faded and now does not match but still looks good, just different shade of tan. Should have used sand color.
